UMich v Boston College

im trying to decide between these two.

Mich .

why michigan?

Ross .

Michigan has better sports

Michigan…much stronger academics.

U-Michigan > Boston College in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY

"U-Michigan > Boston College in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY "

What’s your experience with BC that allows you to be so confident? I went to BC, and live 20 min. from Ann Arbor. Have lots of relatives wh went to Mich., including 5 doctorates. BC’s campus is much prettier; while Ann Arbor is a great college town, it can’t compare to the overall Boston scene for bars, reataurants, museums, concerts, pro sports, etc. My cousin, who was recently on the faculty at U of M, says too many of the professors there don’t care much for teaching…especially undergrads. He says they are much more interested in research and with getting jobs at splashier universities…things I’ve never heard anybody say about BC profs.

“Michigan has better sports.”

You might want to use the past tense here. Next week BC’s hockey team will be in Detroit going for its 3rd national championship in the last decade. And BC’s football team has been to bowl games every year for quite a while, while the Wolverines…

“He says they are much more interested in research and with getting jobs at splashier universities…things I’ve never heard anybody say about BC profs.”

Just how many more “splashier” universities are there than U-M? This sounds likes sour grapes to me. Tell me what “splashier” university your cousin ended up at?

“BC’s campus is much prettier; while Ann Arbor is a great college town, it can’t compare to the overall Boston scene for bars, reataurants, museums, concerts, pro sports, etc.”

Because BC is located in the heart of Boston and not some sleepy residential area…

RJK, you know a lot about U of M. What is your experience with BC?

Re “splashier,” RJK, I know you and I love Michigan and the Detroit area. But you’d be amazed how many people don’t share our love for Rust Belt Gothic, and would rather be in or around Boston, NYC, DC, LA, SF, Seattle, Chicago, Philly, Atlanta, etc.

I never attended BC obviously. I also never mentioned that Michigan is superior to BC in every possible way either.

Have you ever been to BC’s campus or to the city of Boston?

BC/Boston vs. UofM/AnnArbor/Detroit is sort of an apples and oranges comparison, because each school’s mission is very different. As are the students and the surrounding areas. From what I can tell, each school is very competent at what it’s trying to do. I have a hard time believing the OP would be having such a hard time making a decision if he/she actually visited each campus.

You choose your school based on its academics and the opportunities with which it can provide you. Choose Michigan.

Also, you might want to get a new screen name.

^i probably should change my name haha. i’ve heard good things about BCs campus and according to businessweek, the teaching quality isn’t as good as BC’s (agreeing with what Schmaltz said) but UM is higher ranked. im planning to visit the campuses but i was looking for some opinions from students from their experiences.

Just wait for Alexandre. He’ll come tell you why Michigan FTW.

Where did businessweek say that BC has better teaching quality?

If you are referring to the “Teaching Quality Grade” in the BW ranking, you do realize that it is based solely on student survey … which is more likely to reflect tough grading than teaching. FWIW, programs receiving a “B” grade in this category include UC-Berkeley(Haas), MIT(Sloan) and Carnegie Mellon.

And if you believe in the BW ranking, you must also believe in the following:

Academic Quality Rank: Michigan #7; BC #23
Faculty-Student Ratio: Michigan 15.6; BC 26.0
MBA feeder school rank: Michigan #7; BC #14
Median starting salary: Michigan $59,000; BC $55,000 (despite BC’s geographic advantage)

A word to the wise, take the BW business ranking with a very large grain of salt.

Btw, since you like ranking, USNWR ranks Michigan #11 in “Best Undergraduate Teaching” (colleges paying a particular focus on undergraduate teaching).

Schmaltz has only one data point, a cousin who is recently on staff at Michigan. What makes his cousin an expert in Ross teaching or U-M professors in general to make sweeping statements like “too many of the professors there don’t care much for teaching…especially undergrads. He says they are much more interested in research and with getting jobs at splashier universities…”?

And btw, many universities in “Boston, NYC, DC, LA, SF, Seattle, Chicago, Philly, Atlanta, etc.” would love to have some of those Ross professors.

Goblue, what’s your experience with BC?

will i become just another number at um?

None except a brief visit to the campus. I am very familiar with the Boston area though. Note that I said nothing bad about BC or its professors and teaching quality. All I quoted are objective data.
