My daughter is admitted to bachelor of computer science and arts. Is this a good program.? What kind of job they got when they graduate?
@Viviany86 – you might try looking at the Post-Graduation Salaries & Destination Information survey. Google and ye shall find.
@Viviany86, congratulations to your daughter: Carnegie Mellon’s BCSA is a unique and extremely selective program. To be admitted means that your daughter is talented in two very different fields, and if she attends, she would have the opportunity to study both fields together. In a world of specialists, your daughter’s hybrid skills make her a very rare and valuable bridge-builder.
Students who pursue the BCSA often go on to hybrid jobs at the intersection of computing and culture, such as game design, computer animation, interactive cinema and VR (virtual reality), interaction design, information visualization, and electronic music. There is a wide range: some BCSA students become artists and designers (whose practices are deeply informed by computing), and some BCSA students become software developers at companies like Google (but they are able to work with audiovisual media, in fields like computer vision or data visualization). Some BCSA students work in new-media research laboratories or small design agencies that specialize in smart product design.
In my opinion, BCSA students are ideally prepared for jobs which don’t have names yet. This is because culture is transforming so quickly in response to computing, and because so much of computing has shifted to the understanding of media like video and images.
Thank you so much for everyone reply. She also got in computer science honor class (will minor in fine arts)in Fordham university with full scholarship. It is very hard for her to decide which one to go. She love New York City, full of arts and culture. We will visit both school April and decide.
@Viviany86, When she visits CMU, she should make sure to speak with representatives from all 3 departments: the School of Computer Science, the School of Art, and the BXA Intercollege Degree Office. As a BCSA student she would have advisors from all three areas.
Thank you so much for your advice. It is very helpful. I want to make sure that this is what she wants for four years.
@CmuBcsaExpert For someone slightly less creative but talented musically and technically from a CS standpoint(coding etc), where would the BCSA steer them? or would Music Technology be the direction. I don’t understand the differences between to two.
I just had a session with College guidance counselor and all my questions and concerns were answered. I highly recommend reaching out to them directly.
