ZMAN, you can wear your own, as long as it's on your time (you need issue shoes for PE classes, etc.)

Some basics use the clinic as a way to skip training. These are the types who go to the clinic every day or two for minor things...and they are looked down upon for this. However, if there is an actual problem, very few cadets or basics would think less of a person for going to the clinic. I usually avoid the clinic when I can, but if there is an issue, I go there to solve it early.

my son purchased his boots when he and Dad were on a scheduled a tour last March. He did not want to wait until April's orientation. Since he had never been to the USAFA before, he needed to see it for himself before he signed on the line. He also had an Appointment to West Point but AF was his first choice.

I recall his boots cost about $100. Hubby brought cash.

I brought my son his own running shoes when I went to Acceptance Day Parade. (That was the first time I had seen the USAFA.) He sent the issued ones home with me to toss. Son has since purchased new boots. He did not want to risk more foot problems if the original pair was contaminated with fungus AND he could no longer keep a nice "shine" on the toe.

Regarding foot care. Know of one basic who got a medical turnback because of foot problems. Had to have all of his toe nails removed. Probably because his boots were a little too small and he waited too long to see a doctor. Sometimes it's just hard to know the right thing to do.
