I was accepted into UCLA's freshman undergraduate class, as an Art major. It's the end of the school year and I'm finding out what my grades are looking like, only to realize that I've screwed up royally. I won't get into the gritty details, but my Art teacher has always disliked me, and I messed up turning in my final portfolio properly. Today she drops a bomb on me, telling me that I will be receiving a D as my final grade. I also may receive a D in my AP Psychology class, which will probably be raised to a C.

I've heard of stories of people that failed to meet the second semester requirements (UCLA's is a 3.0+ GPA and nothing lower than a C btw) and did not have their admissions rescinded because they sent their schools a letter explaining why they received that grade. This semester I took on a job to support my family and also spent time every day caring for my grandmother, who has advanced Alzheimer's. I'm concerned because I received a D in a class so crucial to my major, and possibly a D in another class. However, though I'm not sure this even matters, my GPA has not changed and these are not required courses (I also attend public school).

Please be brutally honest. What are my chances of having or not having my admissions revoked?

1st Semester:

AP Psychology: C/D?
AP Government and Politics: A

I’m really sorry about your grandmother. I would contact the school immediately and tell them about the situation. Colleges aren’t looking for a reason to rescind your admission, especially if you had extenuating circumstances. Hopefully the understand, or put you on academic probation, at the worst.

Ok, received my grades today. It’s worse than anticipated.
2nd Semester:

AP English Language: A
Draw/Paint (Art) 3-4: F

AP Psychology: D
AP Government and Politics: A

What now, do I have absolutely no chance at all? I’m writing my appeal essay right this minute

Oh dear, this doesn’t look good. You just need to call them and find out what you are dealing with before you write your essay. Don’t avoid the situation. Just face it head on. I know it’s difficult, but that is the best way to handle this.

There was a kid who got an F and was going to Emory Oxford in the fall and was rescinded. So work fast and find out what’s going to happen to you.

You got an F in the class that shares the name of your intended major…? :/

Unforuntately, that F is probably going to be your demise. I hate to say it, because you seem like a really driven kid. It sucks that your art teacher hated you, I had a teacher in 10th grade who I had to appeal to the principal to in order to get an A, she was unjustly grading my work.

If you can give a great explanation and do what mom2collegekids said in post #13, take the class at a CC and pass, you may have a shot of remaining a part of the UCLA student body for next year. But you’re in a very, very tight spot right now. :(

I’m guessing that you HS counselor is on vacation by now and not able to advise you…
Is there any possibility of any errors in calculation? You have to be missing a significant amount of points to fail the class.
You need to call UCLA ASAP and see what your options are.

I am more typically concern for OP due to UCLA strict admission policies. If your GPA for the semesters stayed above a 3.0 then you may be okay. I think UCLA said GPA must stay above a 3.0. Good luck.
If rescind you can look at Santa Barbara City College.
