OK, this may seem frivolous but it's a bona fide question. My friend is an East Coaster who is thinking of going to Stanford because he loves the beach. My question: (1) are there actually beaches that are near Stanford and accessible to someone without a car? (2) is the weather during the academic year good enough so that any such beaches are enjoyable? (3) do Stanford undergraduates actually go there?

Any insight you could offer would be very helpful. Thanks.

weather is good enough but deff not accessible by car. this is not LA.
btw why not just admit that it’s really you who is interested in the question and not some supposed “friend” of yours? regardless, Stanford is near Palo Alto, SF, and San Jose, so there are an abundance of opportunities available and the weather is pretty dang good, so don’t worry.

No beaches close by at all. You are thinking of LA. Half Moon Bay is very cold and foggy most of time. Santa Cruz nice, but not what you are thinking about. Santa Cruz little over one hour drive. Not really a place that undergrads go to hang out, though.

Definately NOT

The closest one is maybe 1/2 hour away by car, and cold and always always always foggy.

Unless you have a wetsuit, you can’t stay in the water for more than a few minutes without catching hypothermia. Even then, you have to be careful of the strong riptides.

The beaches kinda suck.

Also, most undergrad don’t have cars and hence can’t drive to the beach.

You might go once or twice in a school year.

I would look into UCSD, UCLA, Pepperdine, Point Loma Nazarene (right on the beach) instead.

I love swimming in the bay!!!

I go swimming in the Bay all the time whenever I visit SF. Mostly because I’m hoping to acquire superpowers from the waste in the water.

Point Loma Nazarene is right near the beach but, as the name implies, it’s a very religious school that won’t suit a broad range of students. Also, the academics are not comparable to those at the other schools mentioned. Pretty campus, though.
