I’m going to live in a triple and the layout is one bed on the left, one in the middle, and one on the right. On my housing assignment, it says that I have bed space A which I’m guessing is the left bed. My other two roommates called dibs on the corner beds first, but I really want the corner bed. Do we follow the bed space assignment or do I have to deal with having the middle bed? (Or in other words, does the bed space assignment matter?)
I doubt the letters mean anything. You could talk to your RA to see. You could propose to your roommates that you make a swap partway through the year if one part of the room is preferable. You could divide the year in 3rds so each person has some time in the less desirable middle bed.
How did your roommates call dibs? If they didn’t involve you in the discussion or draw straws for the beds, then it isn’t really fair. If the bed thing really bothers you, then you need to speak up and talk to them preferably before you arrive to school.
Show up first on move in day and take your assigned bed space
Draw lots. Only way to avoid ill will going in to the semester.
Call.ResLife.and.ask if the bed assignment means anything – if it does let your roommates know you want to stick to the spaces.that.were assigned. If not let them know you also would prefer a corner bed so you should find a fair way to choose.
When my one D was in college, the bed assignments actually meant something, and the student was responsible for the furniture/space that went with that assignment. Of my three, that was the only time that was an issue, but I wouldn’t have wanted to be responsible for the condition of the space and furniture of someone else over the course of a year.
In my daughter’s suite, the assignments were for a bed/room, and the cabinet space in the kitchenette. Saved all discussions or arguments about it.
Can the beds be moved around? Like, can two for the beds be put end to end to give each of you a corner?
Thank you so much for sharing your input, everyone! We never found out if the bed assignments mattered but we were able to move the beds around so that we all get a wall next to our beds just as @TQfromtheU said. I’m very happy that we were able to figure out the situation (:
Congrats! Great first step in problem solving and adapting in college. (This is why they send parents home as soon as possible.)
Yay! Thanks for completing the circle and letting us know how it turned out.
