So I’m taking swim lessons this summer because I don’t know how to swim. If I can’t pass the swim test, can someone tell what beginner swimming is like? Is it co-ed or are there separate classes for men and women? Do girls get a couple of classes off per month when they’re on their periods?
Thanks!
I looked at the Fall 2015 PE course list and there is one section of Beginning Swimming for women only (section 10399, Tues/Thurs 3:35, at Helen Newman Hall on North Campus).
As to absences when they’re on their periods, from the Cornell PE site under “policies”:
“1. Students attending courses that meet for two 45 minute sessions per week (24 times in a semester), will be limited to a maximum of 4 absences. Proportional adjustments will be made at the instructor’s discretion for courses that meet less than 24 times or more than 45 minutes per session.
2. Absences for medical, religious, academic (ie., field trips), job interviews and personal reasons must be included in the maximum number of absences allowed. Additional absences are not allowed.”
So you’re allow 4 absences for any reason during the course of the semester (assuming the course meets 2x per week), and medical issues don’t give you extra absences.
Some PE courses offer the option to attend the same class on a different day, so that if you could not attend the first week of the month, you might be allowed to attend twice during the second week of the month.
But if you only want to attend the single-sex class, then this would not be possible.
If you wear tampons, swimming during your period is not an issue.
If you’re taking swimming lessons this summer, chances are you will pass the swim test. You just have to swim the length of the pool a few times at your own pace (I’m pretty sure it was one length on your front, one on your back, and one however you want). I would imagine your swimming lessons over the summer would prepare you for it.
Are you allowed to go to the pool during non-swim-test hours to practice by yourself during orientation?
@shalooky I would assume so. Students are allowed to go whenever the pool has open lap hours.
