I'm just curious to know what exactly happens from the time we send the MIT application online or our counselor sends in the school forms till the time we receive our decision letter!
When does the actual application process begin? How many people sit and decide........?
In short what exactly goes on in :Room 10-100, 77 Massachusetts Avenue(copied from the label).

Chris or any other MIT representative, please enlighten us regarding this.

At this point, applications are being put together by the mail room staff – there are thousands of forms from all over, and each needs to be put into the correct application folder.

Starting in early January, completed folders are read by the admissions office and their trained application readers. Each application is read multiple times, and after a reader is done, an application is passed back in to be read again by someone else.

In mid-February, usually around Valentine’s Day, the admissions committee will come together for selection. They will sit in groups and discuss each application to come to a decision on the applicant. If a decision can’t be made, the application goes back into the pile to be discussed by another group.

It takes several weeks to go through all the applications, then winnow the list to the final class, and admissions decisions are usually released around mid-March.

More detailed information on the selection process can be found on the blogs.

Thanks molliebmit.
I have sent my application. Im expecting positive results of a few competitions in mid-Jan. Can i notify the addmission staff about these by end-Jan?
If so how should i do that- mail, email or fax?

Thanks molliebatmit again. I was just wondering whats the use of:
“completed folders are read by the admissions office and their trained application readers. Each application is read multiple times, and after a reader is done, an application is passed back in to be read again by someone else.”
I mean when the admissions commitee sits in mid-Feb, what is this used for?

^ Not sure if this is what you’re asking, but the idea is that the committee should be familiar with each applicant before they all get together in the same room to discuss who will and won’t be admitted.

@PiperXP … after they sit down to discuss to see who is gettin admitted what are the factors which are set to top priorities i mean , “if this XYZ factor is in applicant ABC, ABC is in …” so what all XYZ consists of ??

I seem to recall Chris mentioning last year that they were going paperless and reading everything from iPads, but I might be misremembering?

Your entire application is important. Is this person academically capable of being at MIT? Is this a person who pursues opportunities? Is this a person going to offer something to the other classmates, be part of a team in furthering science? Heck, is the person interesting or inspiring? MIT Admissions has a holistic process. If you’re looking for a formula, you’re not going to find it.

man this was good !! … well i was not looking for a formula i was just finding out where do Medals enter the discussion … so not yet … maybe a week before the decision release they just randomly look over them and the class gets selected ???

The class is selected during the selection committee, which starts in mid-February. The admissions office spends several weeks discussing applications individually and deciding whether each student should be admitted.

Transfers are discussed separately, by a senior subset of the admissions officers. I’m not sure when transfer selection takes place, although I’m sure it’s very close to the time transfers are notified of their decisions.

If they try to make a decision around mind February, will they still be able to take into account the january sat? I put on the application that my sat date would be the January one, but should I also have mentioned it in the optional section?

Yes, the January SAT will reach them in time for decisions, and you did not need to mention that you would be taking the January SAT in the optional section.

The process of decision-making begins around mid-February, but it takes several weeks to select the class. There are a lot of applications to discuss!
