Being a short goalie for a college essay topic?

A lot of people said that writing about sport for your college essay would not do you much. They said that it is a common topic, and it might bore the admissions officers.
I am a 5’4"(165 cm) goalkeeper, but through hard work and determination (sounds cheesy but who cares…) I became the school’s first choice goalkeeper and was able to win a couple of championships.

I somehow become the shortest goalkeeper the school has ever had.
Should I write about this topic, what do you think?

Soccer/football goalkeeper
forgot to tell you…

That depends. Were you or your team any good?

I think it can work, if you keep the focus on you and the qualities about yourself that you want to relay. It could also lend itself to a little humor if that is something that works for you.
The types of sports essays that admissions counselors say they don’t like to see, are the stories about the ‘big’ game, where your team is down, and all of a sudden you make the heroic play and win the championship. Those are very cliche.

I think its a unique topic, iregardless of whether the team is good.

If it’s about you, rather than being a goalie or being short or the game, it could definitely work. This is your chance to show who you are.

One guy wrote a whole novel about a guy spending some time out fishing.
Another guy wrote one about spending some time rafting on a river.

It wasn’t the topic of The Old Man And The Sea or Huckleberry Finn that impressed them on our consciousness, it was what they meant.

I suspect a meaningful essay about toast and jam carries more smash than a banal diatribe about the most important issue of the time. Genuine significance is a precious commodity.
