Im from Canada so i am not really sure what the community is like at any southern university. I am hoping to go to Ole Miss however I am worried that being asian (half thai, half german) would negatively affect my experience. Are people racist towards asians there? no hate, im just a little curious/concerned
I cannot answer your question as I have not been to the University of Mississippi in over 10 years.
But I am curious as to why you are interested in attending the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).
I highly doubt you would have any real problems. There have been Asian minorities in all the Southern states for many decades. In addition, there has been a surge of East Asian foreign students, especially Chinese, at almost all U.S. universities in the past 10-15 years. Many tend to self-segregate due to language and cultural differences, but that’s another issue. As a native English speaker you would be fine.
Maybe. Maybe not. This is not a time to speculate, in my opinion.
As I tell any student when they ask this type of question, racism exists everywhere. I highly encourage you to make the time to visit the University of Mississippi’s campus if you are interested in studying there. That way, you get the sense of how the campus is for yourself and not on anecdotes from others. Everyone’s experience or perspective is different so a firsthand experience will be crucial for you as you would be coming from so far away. Best wishes to you as you consider the university!!
