Being Black at University of Michigan organizers threaten 'physical action'

Bringing up two people out of 1200, like I said before, is not enough evidence to back up your statement. Out of a pool of tens of thousands of applicants, there’s no way to know (especially for people like you who are outside of the admissions process) why someone did or did not get accepted. You also are making no sense with the “below average” acceptances, since the University uses a holistic admissions process. 50% of the student body is theoretically below the average. Should all of them be rejected? Or should we just use a top down approach where we go from 36, 4.0’s, and work our way down until we’re out of seats left to give? Your friend got a 4.0 and a 30, ok? So did thousands of other people?

I also like your very condescending remarks about graduation rates. It’s funny how you assume everyone who doesn’t graduate from college does so because they can’t handle the work. On the contrary, a few studies have shown that the biggest reason behind people leaving school is (of course) money. They cant afford it, and don’t want to accumulate tons of debt. Others try to balance working (some full time) and taking classes at school.
(source: http://www.publicagenda.org/files/theirwholelivesaheadofthem.pdf</a>). This of course disproportionately affects minority students., who make up by far the largest recipients of Pell Grants. Also, the numbers are growing; minority enrollment and graduation is up in all colleges across the nation, despite their relative poverty compared to the majority. But yeah, keep on telling us about how those dumb black kids are getting destroyed by the noble White students

Facts are facts, blacks do not graduate at the same rate as whites. For you to blame finances for the reason of not finishing school is the result of poor fiscal responsibility and I show absolutely no pity for them. By the way, the University of Michigan is very generous for people of need and there are also loans and working over the summer and saving money. I work close to 40 hours a week and I am still able to pull a 3.7 so whats your point? If someone was absolutely dedicated to graduate from the University of Michigan and faced financial difficulty they will find a way.If the University is going to use the top down approach, how is it that the two blacks that I mentioned got accepted while the white wasn’t? Please, tell my how those “dumb blacks kids” are doing in terms of ACT scores, graduation rates, college readiness, and also the achievement gap are doing.

LOL. Why use quotation marks? You’ve implicitly implied that about Black students over your last three posts, so why not just own it?

It’s useless going back and forth, and I hated to revive this thread in the first place.

I love the cowards that open a new user name just to rip something, like minorities.

There was a group in Pierpont yesterday gibing away flyers and asking people to sign the petition. Most ignored them. Asian chicks or international students in general stopped and listened but they seem to generally do whatever people say anyway. I took a flyer but didn’t sign. They claimed the university was racist and that we needed a 10% quota. Which seems racist…

ThisIsMichigan, tell them you don’t think Blacks should be forced to attend the school just because of their skin color and let me know what they say.

White people should be enslaved for about 200 years or so, where Black people become the slave owners.
Then they can finally call it even.

African immigrants to the U.S. do very, very well, and they aren’t whining “slavery”. The Emancipation Proclamation was 150 years ago. We even have a black president. Time to move on…

@ForeverAlone …And this is what’s wrong with much of the African-American race. Were Africans the only people on this Earth enslaved? But are we the race with the most resentment and ignorance? Is society not “even” enough for you? May I suggest moving back to Africa with Marcus Garvey before you create an elaborate plan to enslave 70% of the country?

Anyways, what would be the point of 10% representation? They should’ve just gone to MSU and bothered them for 2.85% more black people because surely it makes a difference.

My post was on the satirical side.

This group does not acknowledge that Michigan was the leader in Affirmative Action. Yet, in many of their posts in the Michigan Daily they’ve called the University racist. Even still, Michigan tries to get around the race-blind by accepting students from known Black majority high schools in the Detroit area(yes, this gives white students the same advantage).

I’ve read comments in the Michigandaily site where Black people claim that the amount of racism has not reduced in in the last several decades. This is blatantly false since any time anything slightly remotely racist occurs, there is huge backlash against that person/group. This is partially largely influenced by online media. What has happened is that people are now MORE SENSITIVE to it. And they are more sensitive it because the media forms prints these racial incidences out in a visible form and allows them to be heard on a wider audience.

However, Black communities seems to under-represent the efforts on how their young culture should change their attitudes and perspectives towards education. This student group could take a few lessons from Kimberly Bryant(Tedx Speaker: Black Girls Code).

If you leave Affirmative Action in place, then that implies that minorities can’t do it on their own. If you’re a high achieving Black student, why would you want to keep it? Wouldn’t you want it gone, that way you can say you actually “did it on your own” and avoid harassment?

I’m Hispanic & I believe Affirmative Action is worthless. I don’t need the bar lowered in order for me to compete. That is absurd. Either you have what it takes or you don’t. I’ll be applying to Michigan for graduate school. I doubt AA is taken into consideration for graduate school. I will either have a the GPA, GRE scores, & killer essay, or I will not be admitted. I will also be competing against the best of the position for a less than 30 spots in the history dept. Such is life. Get over it.
