Being Black in NYU

So I noticed on the Collegeboard site that NYU's student body is only 3% black... most other colleges are like 8%. Is NYC a bad place to be black/do fewer black students apply/get accepted? I have never been to NYC, so I am sorta curious and a bit nervous if being black in NYU is potentially dangerous...

well, its definitely an advantage for you to apply to NYU since you are an underrepresented minority. NYC is an amazing place, regardless of your color.

Although I have no personal first hand knowledge, I find it hard to believe that NYU only has 3% black students. Even if that is true, no one living in NYC will feel left out. Everyone is part of the mainstream...Just like San Francisco.

To me it seems 3% black is quite typical outside of the most elite, or the southern schools, although I've looked mainly on the west coast. I'm from NY and being Black was not a bad thing. Being Black and rich would have been much better!

ok, good. I didn't want to like apply and get all excited just to find out about some crazy racist bob jones-esque policy or something that keeps the percentage so low.

Dude im a qtr black (not very black but still) there are plenty of African-Americans at NYU as a whole...im in Stern and i dont see as many black students...but def enough for you not to feel out of place...

Dude, I'm pretty sure New York City and thus NYU is the most accepting place you can find in anywhere in the country.

3% black seems about right, it hovers around 1% in Stern.

wow... only 1% in stern?! the U.S. is like 12% black... that is crazy low

yea black is definitely a URM. being black at NYU isn't dangerous, i think just cause, this isn't supposed to sound mean, but many black people live in places where going to expensive schools like nyu isn't an option/encouraged. so that's why there aren't many black people.
i mean, i'm hispanic, so i know that many hispanics are poor too. i'm not trying to be stereotypical, so sorry if it sounds that way.

^^there is not 1 percent at stern ....dont exaggerate...there is atleast 5-6%

there is definitely not close to 25-30 blacks in my grade, or from what I can discern other grades either.

heh, actually that is true. I was shocked at how few black people were in my classes this semester. But yea, don't worry, there isn't any sort of animosity/ discrimination against blacks here, its just that for whatever reason there aren't that many here, but you should definitely feel free to apply here and attend if you are accepted.

Would admission chances for a black male student applying be significantly increased compared to applicants of other races?

in my class there are a few black males..more black females tho

I think you would have a great shot if you stats are close to Sterns average...

I would certainly say that being black helps you get accepted to NYU.
After saying that, I feel this is a very sad thing these days...

Be grateful, and don't pay any attention to "being black" in NYU.
This is New York City for gods sake.

what do you mean, is it dangerous to be black and go to NYU?

I mean that it doesn't matter at all, in my opinion. NYC is such a diverse place, and no one will pay any attention or care about your race.

oh, i wasnt referring to what you said, but what the original poster said. Its very odd he made that comment

i'm a girl!
