I know as I’ve read around in the past, I’ve seen people mention being accepted into VP, but not MT, either as a redirect or because they opted to be considered for both - which schools work this way? I’ve started going through my list and looking at school’s websites, but it’s not always clear, so I thought I’d throw the question out there!
I think that situations like this tend be most common at schools with BM MT programs such as:
Baldwin-Wallace
Belmont
NYU: Steinhardt
Oklahoma City
At Viterbo, you can audition for both the MT and VP programs (although that would require two auditions), but there are often prospectives who audition for MT who are recommended for admittance into the VP program instead (although our Department of Music and the Department of Theatre and Music Theatre are separate).
At Jame Madison when you audition for the BM program with voice as your primary instrument you indicate that you are interested in VP or MT, but all BM students with voice as primary instrument are excepted “generally” as vocal music majors. it is not unti lthe jury at the end of freshman year that you “audition” for which emphasis you would like to complete.
The larger MT program at James Madison is the BA Musical Theatre program. This is a direct admit program that requires an audition.
Some students at James Madison do audition for both the BA and the BM programs. This requires separate auditions, but they can happen on the same day… just a long day!
