Being creative on the MIT app...

Hello there.

I like to have fun with my applications and structure them differently, play around with style, etc. I know I can get away with this type of thing at schools like U Chicago, but what would MIT think of this? Is it worth winging it and taking a risk?

Except for the interview, the only way the Adcoms get to know you is by what you write. Go for it! Creativity, no fear of failure, etc. are traits looked on favorably. Re: “what you do for fun” one famous response relates to an applicant who wrote about baking a cake.

I was thinking the same thing. Also, what do they think of humor, and what if they don’t get it and just think it’s weird lol?

Humor is a risk, but if your sense of humor matches that of most MIT students, you will not only make admissions staff laugh, you will also demonstrate how well you’d fit in here and make your application that much more memorable. At the same time, plenty of people have gotten in and probably had memorable applications without making jokes.

I would ask a few current MIT students to read your essay–if they don’t think it’s funny, then it probably doesn’t fit MIT.

gasp!!! I think that may have been me!!!
