Being Gay At A Fraternity At The University of Oklahoma?! (OU)

In just a matter of weeks I will be entering OU as a freshmen and was just curious what it was like to be gay on campus. I was never very open bout my sexuality in high school but I was hoping in college I could be much more open about it and just be who I am. That being said, I know The University of Oklahoma isn't the liberal-minded college campus in the world and was just curious if anyone had any idea what it was like to be gay on campus: the dating scene, reactions from other students, events, etc.

One of my biggest worries though is from a fraternity. I was hopping to pledge Sig Phi Epsilon at OU but was curious if my being gay would matter. I know next to nothing about fraternities at OU or what the people in them are like, but I was just curious if the guys in it would be cool if they knew I was gay or if it could effect my getting an offer to join Sig Ep. Just in general if anyone has any info/tips/experience/words of advice general, it would be greatly appreciated!

You should probably have posted this on the OU board: [University of Oklahoma - College Confidential](University of Oklahoma - College Confidential Forums)

I’m a new transfer at OU (started this summer), and do notice that some people seem remarkably homophobic. In contrast to my past institution, this isn’t a place where I’d feel comfortable walking down the street, holding hands with someone of the same sex. However, most students don’t seem to be homophobic. As far as gay friendly frats are concerned, here’s a list: https://www.ou.edu/content/studentlife/diverse_communities/lgbtq/greek-ally.html</a> Sig Ep isn’t on that list, although for all I know it could be gay friendly. Perhaps you can contact a brother to find out how accepting they are?

I’m not affiliated with greek life, but recently camped out with members of one of the frats on the list, and in the car I asked about how gay friendly OU was. They proudly said that two brothers were gay, and had no issues with the brothers’ sexuality. For questions about the dating scene, you might want to contact Sooner Ally as they’ll be able to answer any questions you have.

Both my parents went to OU and even back in their day there were gay people in the fraternities. Although not many. OU can be very conservative and religious (like many southern schools), but there are people on every campus who are accepting. One of my dad’s best friends through college came out while he was already in the frat, and they never shunned him away. I hope everything goes great for you though. I hope to go to OU next year. My dad was a Kappa Sigma by the way - if that helps.
