What do you guys think?

berkley. nearer to SF and friendlier environment for gays.

Being homosexual equates to insta-discrimination wherever you go...but I would guess that Berkeley's location would make it less discriminative.

Cal Berkeley.

I'm guessing Cal will be less discriminatory toward gays cuz Cal as a whole is gayer than UCLA.

actually...ive spoken to gays at both ucla and cal.

ucla is farr closer to west hollywood than cal is to the castro.

furthermore, weho has a younger gay scene from the socal, whereas sf/castro/east bay has transplanted older men from around the country.

also, aids is everywhere. but the reported aids percentage in the bay faar exceeds socal. (in the bay, 30% reported hiv+, 40% estimated)

and if youre not 21, than ucla. because the gay clubs at castro are 21+, while half of weho is 18+

UCLA seems fairly tolerant, notably having a number of student organizations that promote equality in that area. I think they even have a gay frat/sorority, and as sb mentioned, the proximity to Hollywood and LA's generally open culture might help.

I feel like I know more gay guys at cal than straight ones. When I visited UCLA for a weekend I felt like I was in contact with way less.
There is pretty much no discrimination here against gay people and I don't even know if you would feel like you were in the minority.

what kind of question is this? u plan on being gay??

i feel so safe that gays get "insta-discrimination" cuz next to a gay i look like a saint with my black robe and a deck of magic cards on my wrist.

first of all, if you don't have a car, forget about frequent trips to west hollywood or most parts of of LA for that matter. even though westwood is technicly not far (20 mins drive), taking public transit can take an hour (no direct line; with transfer, you'd have to put up with twice the pain to wait for unreliable buses). that's los angeles for you.

hollywood? even worse!

but castro is easier to get to (see above).

castro also has more to offer to diverse type of people, including students. it has many coffee shops if you like to study in them. the gay/lesbian center is there. west hollywood is hip; if you are on student budget, you may feel kinda out of place. it also has less places to choose to just hang out/study--the two coffee shops are 20-min walk apart.

only couple bars have the 18+ special night; getting involved with the gays/bi club on campus is a better way to meet people and make friends anyway.

cal definitely. i've lived in both areas (though not specifically in westwood, i basically grew up hanging around there) and can say that berkeley is really welcoming. though i don't see obvious discrimination in either places, at berkeley you get less stares.

also, if you choose berkeley, there's a really cool co-op housing option from the university that has a GLBT "theme" and i've known both straight and gay students who lived there and loved it. it was a lot of great fun. http://www.usca.org/coops/osc.php

when i went to the UC-wide UCLGBTIA conferences this year at uc riverside and uc davis...guess which school was the most represented??

ucla

thanks everyone for the input, i suppose i really can't make a bad choice... :)
