Being greek necessary for social life?

I might be going to UCLA this fall and was wondering if joining a sorority is necessary to having a super duper social life? Can you have fun at parties just as much if you're independent or can you not get into them..? How is the social scene for independent people compared to greeks?

THANKS :)

No, not at all! As far as I know, you can have the best social life at college by joining sports, clubs, and all that other fun stuff. You don’t need to join a sorority!

No, as a girl it should always be easy to get into pretty much any party. I would say it’s easier to engage yourself in the party scene as a Greek just because you’re supposed to/required to go to a bunch of social events. You can always have a fulfilling social life as an “independent” but if you really like to party then maybe you should still consider rushing sororities.

If you JUST want to party, then don’t join a sorority as they suck up a ton of time. As a girl you should have no problem getting in anywhere either (unless of course it’s a Greek-exclusive event, i.e. raids). Although if you’re looking into making some great friendships with other girls who you might share some common interests with, maybe look into rushing.

I see, thank you for your answers.

I’ve heard that friendships you make in a sorority are “shallow” or “fake” and that participating in one takes away from valuable time you would be spending getting to know your roommates and floor mates. Is this true?

No not at all! My friends are in sororities and they all love it! The houses, for the most part, are completely genuine and fun here. If you have the money for dues go for it!
