So I'm in a band which I feel very strongly about. So strongly about, in fact, that I only applied to localish colleges because I wanted to stick with my band. UCLA was my dream school but I wasn't accepted, so I'm now going to UCR. I'm going to be dorming there, although I only live about 35 minutes away. I plan to come home on weekends for band practices etc.

Do you think this is going to work out? Could it possibly even help my band by giving me more opportunities to promote/etc? Or do you think the opposite will happen, and school will take up so much of my time that I won't have much time for music?

Anyone in a similar situation?

And just for kicks, you can check out my band here: MySpace.com - The Welcome Kit (Chain Reaction June 1st!) - Corona, California - Indie / Hip Hop / Experimental - www.myspace.com/thewelcomekit

Did I post this in the wrong forum? This is probably more "college life" material. My bad...I'm new here.

It could be a good change to promote your band on campus and in the UCR area, but by going home every weekend you'll miss out on a big chunk of the college social life. Your friends will be talking in the week about their plans for the weekend or what they did the week before and you'll be the one left out. You'll probably end up doing most of your homework/studying during the week, and playing in the band on the weekends--very little time to get out and get involved on campus, meet people, go to games, campus events, etc.

Just my $.02

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and I wouldn't want to miss out on the social aspect. However, since it's really only a 35-40 minute drive, and we practice on Sundays, I figure I could just drive down and then drive back. Then I'd still be getting the Friday/Saturday part of the weekend. Music's a really important part of my life though, and I really don't want to give up on my band.

What do you think?

That makes more sense. I was thinking that you meant go home on Friday after class, come back Sunday afternoon. But leaving Sunday and coming back Sunday shouldn't be a problem, unless you're still too drunk/hungover to drive.

Being in a band while in college

Have you ever seen the marching band from Riverside Community College? They are one of the most awesome marching bands I have ever seen. I don't know if you could participate in it as a student from UCR, but you should make the effort to go see them perform since you will be so close. Every time I have seen them, they got a standing ovation.

If you want to, you can make your band a priority. Pick your major early, and pick your classes efficiently so you can graduate in four years without having any really rough terms with an overload of credits.

Practicing every Sunday is no worse than many extracurriculars other kids are doing; I'm sure many kids who work on your college's newspaper will spend more hours per week working on the paper than you do with your band if all you do is practice Sundays. And of course the swim team athletes are spending many hours per week on their sport and they still manage to take classes and graduate on time.

Relatively few gigs during the school year, right, and none too far away? I think you can do it. Who knows, when you get done with college, it might be that your college education helps you be a success with this band - or your next band.

Remember us when you are rich and famous.

(You could hit "report problem post" and ask the moderators to move this to "college life" if you wanted, but I can see why you put it under "college search" - I understand you are thinking about the wisdom of how you conducted your college search, considering only nearby colleges so you could get home for practice.)
