being indian

being an indian help?

native american indian, definitely...

how about east Indian?? as bad as the plight of far east asians in terms of college admissions?

yes. just as bad.

better to not even fill in the race bubble then put your indian bro

doh..........

you serious?

haha his point is that asian indians are overrepresented at top colleges. therefore, they do not get a boost. some would argue that overrepresented asian groups suffer from reverse discrimination, that is, there are too many applicants of asian descent and thus it is harder to get in due to too much competition.

no i understand his point.. although, I thought that not filling in the "race" field in the application can be seen negatively ( Even though its optional ) .. is this true?

If URMs get an advantage in the admission process, this inherently means that non-URMs are at a disadvantage, because there aren't enough spots to satisfy all qualifed students at competitive colleges. Hence, reverse discrimination.

"although, I thought that not filling in the "race" field in the application can be seen negatively ( Even though its optional ) .. is this true?"

well, the argument would be that if filling in your "race" as asian Indian wouldn't help you or maybe even hurt you due to reverse discrimination, then it's better off not to fill it in at all. will this be viewed negatively? not necessarily. there are people out there of mixed descent and don't feel they're giving their background justice if they just check one box, so they might do something alternative like check "other" or not check a box at all. not checking your race shouldn't put you at a disadvantage.

wait so you think allota if indians apply at psu?

American Indian = URM.
Indian American = ORM.

and being of east indian descent from a populous state can be a double whammy...unless you have something extraordinary that sets you apart from all the other indo-americans! not filling in the race bubble may not work unless there is nothing 'indian' about your name.

yeah, but atleast you grew up with the super-smart indian genes

assuming that i do possess those super-smart indian genes you allude to, then i guess there are positive and negative points to being indian ;)

I just hope you aren't going to NOT fill in the bubble and then have some last name like Patel...they aren't stupid and they'll figure it out =)

I would fill in the bubble...but that's just a personal thing

"better to not even fill in the race bubble then put your indian bro"

I would think it would be rather difficult to obscure one's race (or simply neglect to inform the college of one's race) when one's name is something like Ashwatthama or Maheshvari.

East Asians have the same plight when it comes to college admissions. And they cannot obscure their race either-- would a college admissions officer at Harvard think that Huang ZiYi is some Latina or black student? Uh, no.

No Asians-- East or South-- get URM status. :(

Are Pakistani-Americans overrepresnted too??? In my family (cousins and stuff) alone, three people go to Hopkins, two to Stanford, and one to Harvard and Princeton.

I might be able to pass for an Afghan....I am pretty sure that Afghans are NOT overepresented in HPYS;)

I got the application for Harvard in mail.....

For the race the options include:

Asian American (Country_______)
Asian, including Indian Subcontinent (Country
_______)

I was wondering what's the difference between Asian and Asian American. I mean the race box in ONLY intended for Americans. The international students don't have to fill it. If you are Pakistani-American, do you fill Asian or Asian American. Indian Subcontinent is only mentioned in Asian, and not Asian American. I am really confused by these two options.

if your skin is brown, chances are you are an ORM, don't try and find ways around it lol
