I am Asian Indian. But with the large amount of Asians who apply and are geniuses, I feel like it may be better not to check anything at all on the religion box. I guess I may have the advantage if I did check it down as being a student of color, but I am curious as to if it helps if you are Asian and you are applying to schools like Duke, penn, northwestern…?

You are who you are be proud of that and don't check the box for something you are not as a way to game the system. Being asian or white is not going to give you a boost. You can always opt not to check the box.

Just be truthful and put down your Asian....Plus, once they read your name I bet they will know what race you are (no offense)....Like if you one of the many people with the last name Singh

^^^^ Put down the race that will give you the most points. My friend who is a genius as it is gets to put down hispanic because he is like 25%. Harvard here he comes.

First off, you can't lie on the application. Schools have honor codes and the best schools follow them strictly so that people take unsupervised tests by themselves wherever they want to take them.

In terms of marking the box, marking white/asian is in theory not supposed to help or hurt you. In practice, asian is an OVER-represented minority at some colleges (such as the UC colleges) and I can not imagine that marking asian is not going to hurt you to some degree. On the other hand, asian is a URM at some colleges (such as in the South). You should look at the colleges you are interested in and see if asians are over-represented, under-represented, or neutral.

If it isn't going to help you and if your last name doesn't give it away, I would not mark the box at all. This is not the time to be proud of your ethnic heritage or to think that you have to be truthful and fair. It is a game so play by the rules. The race question is none of their business anyway except they have to report the information to outside agencies.

Rather than concentrate on this, work on making yourself look unique to the adcoms. Market your EC's and any special traits that you have to them.

-wow, if you didn't know, this "game" should be played by giving yourself the best shot you have at colleges. This can easily be done by pulling out the race card.

-thousands of URMs every year are admitted because of their race/ethnic background. This is the game. If you play by the nice rules, you lose.

someone told me that although asian indians are actually asian, they are legally considered "white" under some court ruling from the 1970's (?). don't know if that's true or not.
