Hi, I noticed that a lot of colleges require you to live in a dorm room for a certain period of time. Do they enforce this? If so, how?

By charging you for it.

My school requires all freshmen to live in the dorms unless they qualify for an exemption, like living at home with parents within a certain distance from campus (I think its 50 miles), being married or having a kid, or being over 21. You have to provide proof you qualify for an exemption or I assume you're billed for a room or have your registration cancelled.

My college required freshman to live in dorms. I think they also required sophomores too, but I really don't remember if sophomores had to.

However, they would let freshman live off campus if they put up a big enough fuss. I think that only works for smaller schools, though.

I loved living on campus, though. Maybe you should give it a try before knocking it.
I miss getting "free" HBO and Shotime. We had like 8 different channels worth HBO.

cellardweller has it right. You will be charged for a dorm room and probably a meal plan, but no one cares whether you actually sleep there or not. My freshman year roommate only ever showed up once, to tell me that I have the room to myself because she is staying with a friend off-campus. I didn't mind :)
