I’m stuck between these schools! I want to major in Audio Engineer and minor in Music business. I’ve great things about both Belmont and Middle Tennessee State University. I’ve toured both and both of the campuses are great.
Does somebody know anyone who has been through either program and whether they liked it and enjoyed the college too? I’m trying to get a feel for the campus vibe and if kids are happy with their college decision. This is such a hard choice!
Thanks for anyones input!!
I have a good friend whose son did the Audio Engineering major at MTSU and loved it, and had a job offer when he graduated but decided to try to launch his own band. It really is one of the top programs in the country as far as I can tell, this student had his choice of schools and chose MTSU (over Berklee, for example.) I also have a son at Belmont studying composition. He has been very happy there. Both schools offer internships in Nashville and have their owen connections with studios. I know the studio facilities at Belmont are really great, with Ocean Way studio right on campus and Belmont now owns the old RCA Studio B. Belmont give students a lot of opportunities to run their own shows and recordings - there are 5 Showcases every year that are completely student run, from the performers to the audio engineers to the marketing. I don’t know if there are similar opportunities at MTSU. MTSU is a much bigger school and has more sports, a marching band (I know the director, went to college with him, he is fantastic and so is their band) and things like that, though Belmont has very good basketball, volleyball, and baseball teams. I think you would probably be happy at either school in terms of the programs. Let me know if you have other questions about Belmont.
Those are some great things to hear @honestmom !!! I really love all the opportunities for student run shows at Belmont. Does your son enjoy the convocation hours? How does he feel about them? This school seems really awesome and while i am Christian, I am just not overly religious.
Thank you for your insight! It really helped.
My S has struggled with the convo requirements. Has to do a whole bunch of them this year. It is hard if you are working part time, and he wanted to move off campus early so we told him he could only do that if he paid for it. He isn’t overly religious either but hasn’t had a problem at Belmont.
@honestmom Oh no! I hope your S gets through them all. I’m glad to hear he hasn’t had a problem at Belmont. This is going to be a tough decision but now I have a better insight into the schools. Thank you!!
My son is in the Recording Industry Major at MTSU and he loves it. He plays in orchestra and chamber ensembles and also in a band. He got great scholarship money for music merit and high test scores (had a terrible GPA). I don’t think Belmont would be as affordable for us.
