So, I've been accepted to Beloit.....how is Beloit's anthro in comparison to UChicago's and UM's for UNDERGRAD? I'm that kid who likes to sit in front of the class and I like my relationships with my teachers. I also don't make friends easily.....so not sure if those personality traits would help pick a "better fit."

My son is a freshman at Beloit. I don’t know how it compares to Chicago or Michigan, but the anthropology program at Beloit is a big deal with a lot of school focus on it as one of it’s specialties.

I would say that my son doesn’t make friends easily but he has a list that he constantly talks about that he’s met playing magic. We’re talking about more friends (that he can call and ask for a ride stuff) than his entire high school career. The Science Fiction Fantasy club has been great for my son and he’s actually met quite a few anthro majors through there activities. He’s also very much into class participation and that has really been supported by his small classes. If you’re serious about anthropology and are looking for a small LAC, Beloit might be a very good fit.

Thanks - my only worry is that I’d change majors. My other areas of interest are Spanish/foreign languages, philosophy, or maybe sociology/human relations.

What I really like is learning about the past and present - cultures, people, languages…but when history includes presidents and battles and politics, I do not like that as much.

Changing majors is always a consideration when you go to a small school but I think Beloit would still work for you. My son is a history major and his thing is presidents, battles, etc and he was concerned that it might be too much social history. I was kind of surprised at his attitude. He told me that he probably knew the history topics he was interested in in-depth at the undergraduate level already (which is probably true). He said it was the time to try stuff outside of history and you don’t always know what you’ll like. He’s now thinking about minoring in classics and is actually taking Greek. In any case, I think Beloit covers the other areas you’re interested in and could probably accommodate any major change short of engineering–and they even have 3-2 programs for that. There is always the risk that you go into a department that doesn’t focus you’re looking for, it’s just one of the trade-offs going to a small school.
