At the moment I am trying to decide between Lawrence and Beloit- both are excellent smaller liberal arts schools in the midwest. Money isn't a factor, as I have recieved tuition remissions/scholarships at both schools.

I am considering doing a fair amount of work in the sciences (pre med) but I am not really sure what I want to major in (I might do something crazy like spanish or philosophy).

I would appreciate any input or opinions comparing the two institutions- thanks!

That was definately the feeling I got when at Lawrence- the facilities blew Beloit's out of the water, and the professors seemed more involved.

I did the whole Mac, Grinnell, Carleton, Oberlin-type thing and then realized that I wanted to stand out as an undergrad (instead of falling in the middle of the pack). Both appear to be decent institutions, but I really would like to know which would be better for a good education while still staying near the top of my class.

Thanks for the comment- I would love to hear some more

Invision, you might try PMing Carolyn, or posting this on the Parents' forum. Carolyn's daughter goes to Beloit, but Carolyn also has a great fondness for Lawrence (and has had professional contact with them).

My friend has daughters at each school. One is a senior at Lawrence, the otehr a junior at Beloit. Both are very happy. My son certainly loved Beloit. You have wonderful schools to choose between, and like the prior poster, I am sure Carolyn will have some insight for you.

I know that Beloit is on a huge science building binge. So, they soon should have top of the line facilities (I think the President is a biologist by training). That can either be good or bad for you -- good if the facilities are done either when you get there or soon thereafter; bad if you will spend most of the time as a science major in the middle of construction (I speak from expierence on this one).

Beloit and Lawrence are both fine places. Beloit tends to attrack a bit more eclectic student and has a bit more of a "by the seat of your pants" feeling --Lawrence, I would say, is more solidly midwestern and more "by the book". If you are motivated, you will receive an excellent education at either place. If I were you, I would choose the place largely on where I feel most comfortable. Hope that helps.

I toured both colleges with my S. Lawrence had a great science facility with wonderful resources. We met several professors in the areas of science and math and I was impressed. I walked out feeling that the professors really cared about their students and that they were good teachers. Lawrence, as I recall, has a fairly good success rate in gaining admission to medical school Also, the city of Appleton is close to campus with easy access, and it's quaint and charming, much more so than Beloit. Beloit is also a good school, but Lawrence connected with both of us (especially my S) much more. You can't go wrong with whatever choice you make. By the way, I sat next to someone on a plane who had graduated from Lawrence and she raved about the school and the education received.

Thanks for the great responses! I posted this up in the parents forum to get a few additional opinions, but from what I am reading both schools are great options. At the moment I am leaning towards Lawrence due to its endowment and facilities- the faculty were also great.

I will send Carolyna pm-thanks for the recommendation.

Any other thoughts- especially about the nature of the academcs at either school (difficulty) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

From a native cheddarhead, Appleton>>>>>>Beloit (are those enough "greater than" signs?) if you value surrounding city to any extent, which I do/did.
