Has anyone visited Beloit during one of its Summer Visit Days? I’m wondering if that’s the best way to see the college during the summer. I understand that if we can’t make it on one of the Summer Visit Days, we can still get a tour and a meeting with an admissions officer, though there wouldn’t be the extra planned activities. Wondering if it is worth it to try to schedule our visit during a Summer Visit Day. Thanks.

S visited in February. Visiting during the school year gives a much clearer picture of a college. But any visit is Way better than no visit. Plus schools really do take more seriously (and track) the applicants who have visited! Visits are always worth the effort, especially if you are in the area already. The Visit Days with planned activities will give you a lot more info than if you just popped in for a quick tour. S had a great time, they really roll out the welcome mat at Beloit.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, visiting during the school year isn’t an option. I figure that with the summer visit days, there’s more of a chance for my son to see a few Beloit students and faculty.

I took my daughters (one already in college elsewhere) and niece to a summer visit day. I echo the statement that Beloit rolls out the welcome mat. The director of admissions spoke for about 45 minutes and was very engaging and dynamic. A panel of students and faculty answered questions. The student from Atlanta who said that she had never heard of Wisconsin, much less Beloit, before she was told about the school was did an especially good job of selling the school.

Going to a summer visit day last August really hooked my son on Beloit. We didn’t expect much–not sure why–but were headed to Madison to visit friends and Beloit was an easy side trip. The Admissions director is fabulous. He really does a great job of spelling out “the Beloit difference” and why the school is uniquely wonderful for a specific kind of student–one who is thoughtful, curious, not a follower. A panel of students and faculty who spoke really demonstrated that. We ended up eating lunch with a group of visitors who seemed to be on tours of every single college in “Colleges that Change Lives” (plus dozens of others) and they were all surprised and impressed. Even the mediocre cafeteria food (NOT Beloit’s strong suit) didn’t damage the impression. Up to that point, we had visited mostly better regarded LACs (Macalester, St. Olaf, Grinnell) which were all impressive. But even my son noticed–and was impressed by–how much more time Beloit spent talking about its educational program, atmosphere, study abroad/leadership programs, while those other places focused on their award-winning cuisine, gigantic fitness centers, daily NYT delivery. I was pleased he noticed and appreciated that difference. (He’s going to college, after all, not a 4-year spa.) We highly recommend the summer visit day.

I second what people have said here about the presentation during a visit day - the Dean is great and the panel was very informative. I really ended up liking Beloit (my son didn’t end up liking small LAC’s, even though I thought he would/should!).
