I: Hey, did you read this Hesse’s book?
DD: Which one is that?
I: Beneath the Wheel
DD: Maybe I read a chapter
I: Why don’t you finish it? It’s really a good book. It’s about a gifted homeschooled boy working hard for admission and then going to a boarding school. Very similar to your situation.
DD: Wait, didn’t they boy suicide at the end?
I: Well, maybe. But it’s a really good book.
DD: What a nice roll model! I will read it.

@SculptorDad Haha! That plot sounds very fitting to your username and situation. Thought you were kidding at first, I had to google it!
@26443586, it’s really an engaging book for teens. The biggest surprise I had in the U.S. is that teens don’t read Hesse instead of Austin or Shakespeare, which are too light for my taste compare to Hesse or Luise Rinser.
I had to read Siddhartha in high school, and I hated it. I remember it as the worst thing they ever made us read, “Metamorphosis” running a close second. I’ll take Austen or Shakespeare, thank you very much.
@twinsmama, well, we all have different preference. For me the lightness of Austen was unbearable.
