Can anyone recommend any Good books about BS life, appropriate for a 13 yr old ? By good, I mean well written, not pulp.

well do you want a good perspective of boarding school or bad? because there are some for both....

prep. people often assume it is rather gossip girl-esque (no offense to gg fans) but it really isn't anything like those.

We had a little thread about that recently.

I haven't found a good book myself yet, so I'm still interested in more replies.

There is a series of books "The Upper Class" that were written by 3 students who attended Hotchkiss. I believe there are 3 books: The Upper Class, Miss Educated, and Off Campus. I haven't read any of them, so I don't know if they're worth reading or not. All are available through Amazon.

I would suggest Lorene Carey "Black Ice". This is an autobiographical reminescence about being young, black and vulnerable and being at St. Paul's. Wonderful, not just for its view of boarding school life but for how a perceptive teenager experiences her world through the lens of boarding school expectations.

Thanks everyone. Grejuni - I should have done a search, cant believe I missed it.
Paleozoic, Black Ice is a book we will look for.

Probably the Harry Potter books are what I had most in mind....and she has read them :)

Holden Caufield can wait. I don't want to push teenage angst, from any era, before I have to.

Harry Potter, Prep (which i HATED, but was probably pretty accurate) Finding alaska, a Great and Terrible Beauty, (one of my favorite books) the curse of the Blue Tatoo.

Nelly - three books you mention I have not heard of. Thanks.

wow, this is a great thread....bump :)

Anytime sadie. i have to warn you tho, Finding Alaska is pretty depressing. and the other two don't give the happiest perspective on boarding school either.

Jenny - Thanks, I will look for those as well. Will post back reviews on anything I read.
Looks like its going to be a busy summer.... our reading list gets longer and longer!
