Berkeley and the foreign language nightmare

I did not notice this until now, but I don't think that I fulfilled Berkeley's foreign language requirements for transfer. I went over my course list with my counselor multiple times prior to submitting my apps and planning my classes, and I got the green light not to take Spanish II. I'm thinking that this might have been in error. Before I go into the 28 unit course load territory this semester; I need to be absolutely certain that I must have Spanish II from my JC to be considered for Berkeley. I took Spanish I in college long ago. I took high school Spanish I and II. I think that's only good for IGETC right? I'm almost positive the info on assist.org was changed regarding Berkeley since the UC app deadline otherwise I don't know how I could have ever overlooked this. I hate languages. God dammit.

IIRC the high school Spanish classes should be able to cover the foreign language portion of IGETC

And this is for Haas Business Admin transfer. This is not looking good.

In high school: by receiving a grade of C- or higher in courses comparable to the third year level of any language other than the language of high school instruction.

From the Haas site, so yes you do need to take Spanish 2.

And it hasn’t changed, been the same.

cc counselors strike again!

Grape, what is your GPA? How many prereqs have you completed? :)

GPA stands at 3.71 including some grades when I was a terrible student and got B’s as well as one grade replacement. I’m taking Calc II, Stats, and Managerial Accounting Honors this semester. Also taking Gen Chem 2nd semester just because I want to take it as well as an easy Honors class to complete my Honors requirement for UCLA’s TAP. The only prereq that I would have needed for Haas is an Intro to Literature class specifically for Berkeley. The Lit Class that I need to petition at another college puts me at 26 units. Spanish II, which I have very low confidence in since it’s been about 7 years since Spanish I would put me at 31 units for the semester and be taken at another JC that has lots of native speakers. I would really prefer not to give up on shooting for Berkeley but overall success seems unlikely having to take Spanish. :/

How odd, I haven’t seen that requirement in a very long time lol. I thought it was just for graduating, not transferring.

Call Berkeley and ask them.

If you need it, take it Credit/No Credit and don’t stress over it.

Berkeley: IGETC is acceptable for all majors in the College of Letters and Science. The Haas School of Business and the colleges of Engineering, Environmental Design and Chemistry have extensive, prescribed major prerequisites. In general, IGETC is not appropriate preparation for majors in these colleges. Although IGETC satisfies breadth requirements for most majors in the College of Natural Resources, specific lower-division major requirements must still be satisfied. Be sure to check with the college or visit the ASSIST website for more information./quote

It sounds like IGETC, including its foreign language section, may satisfy the requirements for Haas, but is discouraged because you’ll end up taking more classes overall than by simply following the standard Berkeley GE requirements. They’d rather have you take fewer GE classes and focus on major classes.

If this is the case, you should be okay, assuming you did complete most or all of your prerequisites. It depends on the CCC, but some CCCs have first-semester foreign languages that satisfy the IGETC requirement (meaning, in effect, that one semester at these CCCs is the same as two years in high school).

That said, you should absolutely call Berkeley and check. In fact, if you can email them and you receive a response, that would be better–you’ll then have something in writing.

I would love if this was the case, and I didn’t have to take it. Hopefully it doesn’t come to a point where I have to P/NP something. I will definitely call/email Berkeley on Monday. Thanks for all the helpful comments!

Did you find our your answer? How many years of foreign language is necessary?
