hey guys, i recently sent in my berkeley appeal (a couple days ago). i read somewhere that the decision should come before may 1, but what should i do in the meantime? my backup is UCLA and i'm not sure if i send in my SIR or not. if i do send in my SIR, do i still apply for housing and such? any info is great, thanks guys.

yeap, sir can be taken back, ACCEPT ucla now, and use appeal as a back up

Do everything that you need to with your backup school (UCLA). If you get accepted to Berkeley, cancel your Intent to Enroll at UCLA and all that.

well, my first choice is berkeley (obviously, otehrwise i wouldn't appeal). so i would send in my SIR and send in my housing and if i do get into berkeley, i would simply call them and cancel everything? i assume it's non-refundable.

does anyone know if appeals ever come back before may 1st for berk?

^
i believe it said if you send it in before April 15, they should come back before May 1

Yeah, you'll lose a deposit but its worth it

Hey, I appealed to Berkley as well. In their FAQ link in the rejection, it says that some appeal decisions may not be made until after May 1st and you should not hesititate to give your SIR to another college in the meantime. We have a lot in common, Berkeley is my first choice and UCLA (or USC, but leaning more towards UCLA) is my choice thus far. Anyway, you do have to pay and you'll want to do everything you would for entering so that if you don't get accepted for the appeal you are still safe. I was talking to my parents about it, they said a lot of kids do that and then end up changing their minds. It's a couple hundred lost but for those who can spare it, it's not a big deal I guess.

same boat as you all

just out of curiosity, how long were your appeal letters?

3 pages, arial, 9.5 font, 2750 words
I've heard that this is very long for an appeals letter. Feel free to say "holy ****"

holy ****.

there are two routes one can take, i originally started out longwinded but then at the suggestion of a friend reduced it to one page (about 500 words).

i wonder if i'll regret that...

good luck!

DanielR2007 wins by a narrow margin. Mine is 3 and 1/4 pages, size 10 Arial font. The appeal itself is 2,519 words, and with the heading and everything else, 2,561 words. I'd rather have it shorter--nice and concise. I'm worried the appeal committee will take one glance, decide my long letter is not worth the eye-straining, and dismiss it immediately. Part of me thinks I screwed myself over for making it so long. We'll have to wait and see. I have hope but I'm prepared for the worst.

Wow, now I'm actually thinking "should it have been longer?" Even though its not recommended, I always thought mine being really long might make it stand out. Its insane but at a certain point the mind has to convince itself everything is fine. Oh well, I slaved over that letter and I don't think I could get it any better.
And I included two additional essays. 2.5 pages, arial, 12 font, 1613 words

Mine is only 1 page and about 800 words. I'm happy with it thought. I included mostly stuff about myself, I blabbed enough about my scholastic accomplishments in my original application. My feelings are that if they only wanted 1000 words the first time, why would they want 3000 the next time around.

Length doesn't matter. The content does. so, don't worry if your appeal letter is not as long as others'.

holy **** danielr2007, 3 pages with 9.5 font??? and two additional essays? wow, thats a lot of writing haha. I only wrote 1 page, 12 font times new roman because this person at berkeley helping me with my appeal told me that appeal letters should never be more than 1 page. But i don't know if writing more than that is really bad, but shouldn't be.

I didnt know that we could write another essay, i just wrote a sentence or two with a pithy quote, lol, damn, at least i have a fallback school that i like
