Berkeley EECS - Can i take CS61B before 61A?

I am an incoming transfer student in spring. 61A offered in spring is taught by Hilfinger, which i heard that his class is crazy hard. So can i take 61B without finishing the pre-req 61A, and take 61A later?

I know someone who has taken 61B before 61A, but he had already taken E7 (the alternative pre-req for 61B) and I’m pretty sure he had some outside programming experience. Based on what I’ve read on other posts here, no one ‘checks on you’ to make sure you’ve finished the pre-reqs, it’s up to your own judgement regarding what you believe you can handle

what if i took 12 units(including 61B) for the spring, and the prof. drops me for not meeting the pre-req, am i screwed? And do you think Shewchuk, the one teaching 61B, will do that?

It’s doable, but heavily not recommended. You’ll find 61B to be harder than a hard 61A.

There are hard professors, but the truth is, once you get your degree, you will be dealing with problems much harder than what Hilfinger gives. You might as well be prepared.
