Hi, im a civil engineering student. Im just wondering what does it takes for berkeley to accept transfer student from california community college for an engineering major?
Thanks
My bf got in for Mechanical Engineering in fall 2015 from a CCC. He had a 4.0. His volunteer work was rebuilding homes after a natural disaster, delivering food and aid to migrants for 3 years, and being a night supervisor at a homeless shelter. His extra curriculars were tutoring math, chemistry, english and economics as well as being a member of the chemistry club. He talked a lot about his fascination with mechanics and things he had researched and built, his world travelling (spent a year backpacking through asia), and about his beer knowledge in his essay (he was a bartender at a world class beer bar). 5 of his classmates were also accepted to Berkeley (4 for MechE, and 1 for physics). They all had 3.9-4.0’s and similar extra curriculars.
Good luck!
One more thing. Neither my bf nor his COE admitted classmates were minorities that counted (all were asian, indian, and white) though one was ROTC. And all of them completed the transfer curriculum in 2 academic years.
A resource that helped my bf was the transfer admission center at UC Berkeley. He went there several times for guidance and had them review his essay. He was also accepted to UCLA and UCSD but rejected to Stanford. My bf is pretty poor and all the UC’s met a huge portion of his financial need (Berkeley gave him 20k out of a projected yearly need of 31k purely in grants and scholarships, with the remainder to be taken as loans at his expense). Hope this helps.
@reygun thats very nice to hear. Mycurrent gpa is 3.956. I have straight As and one B (which spoils my 4.0) i volunteered a lot for community service (100+ hours in an elementary school) my major is civil engineering. My passion for civil engineering started when since childhood as my dad has a civil engineering business in asia. Hes always taking me to the project and showing things to me about building factories and high rises. His dream is to send me to berkeley and go back to continue his business. For extracurriculars, i participated alot in an international student club events (im the club officer). And what i feel that stands out is i left asia in the age of 16 to attend community college. What are my chances? Im very worried right now about that one B
Like I said, 3.9-4.0 range is what Berkeley wants. The rest is about who you present yourself as. I would put together a list of topics you want to talk about in your essay and, at minimum, get a phone appointment with the transfer center to talk about it with them. It’s really better to go in person though I realize that may not be possible if you don’t live in the area. There’s no way I can give you realistic chances. I can only tell you that nothing you’ve stated will eliminate you, but no one can guarantee that those things will get you in.
Don’t get obsessed with Berkeley either. I know it is your dream, but if you end up getting into other good schools you will spoil it by being too focused on Berkeley. Enjoy what comes your way, and keep studying hard.
