I have an offer for a Channing Bowditch apartment that I was going to accept today. However, when I looked at the price, the monthly rent was $9620 instead of the $962 that it saids on their website. Should I accept and have faith that the university will not charge me a ridiculous rate or should I wait, (My deadline is by today..) hoping they will give me extra time due to the mistake.

Has anyone has this happen to them..? If so what did you do and what happened?

Accept it – if there’s any blank spot on the acceptance form, state “at $962 per mo.”

Even if the blank spot is after your name!

If you cannot do that, or even if you can do that, print your contract, then cross out & initial the extra “0” that is clearly in error, and fax it to housing. At least you will then have a paper trail of your understanding and their error.

But before you do all of this, please review the contract. Make sure it says “$9620 per month”. It may be giving you the full 10 month lease contract, which would, in fact, be $9620 for the 10 month period, divided by 10 = $962/month. Often the Cha-Bow leases are drawn up for the entire period (be it the 10 months or the year lease), and you may have not read it right.

OK, then just do what I said at the top; you can fax and email housing – information will be on the housing portal – just have written proof that you are accepting, but letting them know there’s an error.

Not to worry – it’s clearly a mistake, since you can rent a nice house in Malibu and fly up to Cal every morning for classes for $9620/month!

If the contract is wrong, don’t put your name on it, no matter what you may reasonably expect.

Cross out the 0, initial it, and fax it to them. Otherwise, it’s better to risk losing the apartment; you can find other living arrangements if necessary.

Does acceptance imply that you’re signing a contract? If so, you shouldn’t accept online unless you can specifically notate the change to the contract.
