Berkeley Summer School 2011 (Science classes)

Hello, I'm a spring admit, so I'm kinda new about UC Berkeley info and whatnot.

To cut to the chase, I'm taking Chem 3a right now but didn't get into the lab (sadly).

Therefore, I am considering taking Chem 3al in the summer. Also, I just enrolled into Physics 7a (for pre med requirement and just in case if I want to branch into CS). What do people think about these summer classes? Is the schedule too heavy? Also, will financial aid cover this tuition?

The class schedule for my summer looks like this (they are both in Session C for eight weeks).

Chem n3al (lec): Online
Physics 7a (lec): Mon-Thurs 8-930am
Physics 7a (lab): Mon&Wed 130-430pm
Physics 7a (dis): Tues&Thurs 10-11am
Chem n3al (lab): Tues&Thurs 6-10pm

Total of 6 units.

Also thinking of looking into internships/volunteering for research, etc.

You don’t need Physics 7A for L&S Computer Science. Unless you’re trying to switch into EECS, drop 7A.

7A shouldn’t be too bad over the summer. Physics labs are really easy and the material shouldn’t be too bad over the summer.

Financial Aid covers everything above 6 units (not housing, they’ll offer loans for that).

What’s the difference between 7A and 8A? Also, should I go for EECS? I hear that EECS is better that L&S due to the courses. I’m aware that EECS has more courses that are needed to take.

Financial Aid covers at the minimum of 6 units, not above. Shown here

Sorry for the late reply. Midterms are keeping me busy >.<

EECS and CS courses are the same if you want to do CS, except you’d take EE42 and EECS takes EE40 and EE20N.

I talked with the finaid people about my own aid. You should have received a message in myfinaid if you’re eligible for summer aid (go check). If you’re eligible, the message should tell you the max award you would get.

Thank you, Ramblinman, for the info.

I’m also grateful of your information, arduouspallor. I will go and check it soon because I just submitted my fafsa today.

Physics 7 (or H7) uses math more heavily and is for physics, chemistry and engineering majors (note that math pre/co-requisites: 1B for 7A, 53 for 7B, 54 for 7C). Physics 8 uses math less (16A) and is for biology majors and pre-meds. Physics 8 is generally considered to be “easier”, though students who like math and are good at it may prefer Physics 7.

Neither is specifically required for L&S CS, although if you want to take EE 40 instead of EE 42, it lists Physics 7B as a prerequisite. L&S CS and EECS majors choose from the same CS courses for their majors.
