Berkeley, ucla, usc, emory, or northwestern

I am from New York. I was wondering which one is the best for premed.

while I'm not really sure of an answer to your question, I would just like to say - come to berkeley! we need more new yorkers. plus it's a nice change. you're going to get a lot more of the northeasterner crowd at emory or northwestern.

Northwestern.

dunno about usc and emory
ucla's med school acceptance rate - about 50%
berkeley - about 60%
northwester - i heard 80% but cannot verify.
i looked up ucla and berkeley's numbers myself on their career center website.

what major are you interested in?

I thought berk don't have a good premed...

i would consider 10% above national average pretty good

biology major

I don't know about USC. But out of the other 4, Northwestern has the highest med school placement rate (I found a page that showed Emory's number was like 50% and I was shocked). According to an exit survey at Northwestern, 90% of those pursuing further study (44% of them were premed) were admitted to one school or more and about 2/3 got into their first choice.

I also called the premed advising at NU couple years ago and the premed advisor told me the placement rate in past 3 years have been fluctuating between the high 70s and low 80s.

Here's the source of Emory's number:
<a href="http://www.career.emory.edu/images/PDF%20Forms/PreMed_Synopsis_2004.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.career.emory.edu/images/PDF%20Forms/PreMed_Synopsis_2004.pdf</a></p>

the 50 % rate counts everyone at emory applying to medschool including those with a gpa of 3.0 and under. emory has a 90% rate when it comes to students with a gpa of 3.5 and over. same goes for all the other schools including northwestern..

I've also heard Northwestern has around 80% acceptance rate. Berkeley isn't exactly great for pre-med, but it's a little better than UCLA and maybe the other two.

So what...I can say Berkeley has a 98% rate (made up number) when it comes to students with a GPA of 3.9 or higher. Saying that doesn't mean much because there's a big "if" behind if you go to Emory, whether or not you'll get a 3.5. Therefore it is much more relevant to look at the general acceptance rate.
