berkeley vs U of michigan ann arbor vs U of texas at austin

I am having a hard time deciding between these three schools, want input on what people think/have heard from, how fun the school is, atmosphere, academics. I'm interested in psychology/business/international development or relations, still haven't completely decided yet.

Berkeley
Univeristy of michigan
Univeristy of texas at austin

post your thoughts. thanks!

Where are you in-state? Have you been admitted into Ross?

I’d go to Michigan for business and Berkeley for psychology given I were OOS for all institutions.

oh i live in california about an hour away from berk. i didnt apply to any business school because i didnt know i wanted to do it. im accpeted ot econ for all 3 schools but will prolly change it

For the record, Berkeley’s undergraduate business school is ranked about Michigan’s, the in-state fees would be inignorably lower than paying OOS to either of the other two institutions, and transfer from the College of Letters and Sciences to Haas is fairly straightforward.

It is hard to justify the tuition differential, especially between UCB and UM when you are CA in-state. My S also was accepted to all 3 schools, as an Engineering major, and we are also CA residents.

, but what is the difference in atmosphere between the 3 schools

“For the record, Berkeley’s undergraduate business school is ranked about Michigan’s”

Michigan’s psychology program is also ranked as high as UCB’s at the graduate level.

^ We’re talking undergrad here, rjk. ;)

I’d save the money and go to Berkeley.

All are strong for undergrad business. Can you afford all your options?

Berkeley will be the more intellectual environment. Michigan is the quintessential university town. Texas is a super fun college city…and growing fast.

IN State = go to berkeley. Even if all things were equal, I would opt for Berkeley and Texas would not be in the conversation.

The two schools are of similar prestige but Ross is more strategically situated than Haas, IMO.

^ For what?

For East coast jobs.

There’s not as much to do for a business major on the West coast. -.-

^ Yep, businesses and worthy jobs are only on the East coast -.-

i dont even know if im going into business yet. id rather get advice on overall atmosphere of the college and city. college town. people. more that stuff.

“^ We’re talking undergrad here, rjk.”

Of course I know that. I also am aware that there are no reliable undergraduate rankings of psychology departments. Do you think I would have brought that up? ;-)

grammcd,

Berkeley is an interesting college town overlooking the San Francisco Bay. It has numerous good, cheap places to eat in the “Gourmet Ghetto”. Football (except for this upcoming season) is played right on campus. The City of Berkeley is student oriented and very pedestrian friendly and the rest of the Bay Area is readily accessible via BART. Drawbacks are housing searches can be stressful, and the city is pretty gritty with a large homeless population that turns off a lot of kids. But, you probably already knew this because you live only an hour away. :)

Ann Arbor is definitely the quintessential college town. It’s probably a little easier (and cheaper) to get housing. Drawback would be the weather compared to Berkeley.

Austin is a very fun city. It’s supposedly the live music capital of the world and has a younger, hipper vibe.

I’ll let others who are more familiar with their colleges add more details.

Bottom line: all your choices are excellent and you really can’t go wrong. One thing to consider, besides cost and atmosphere, is on-campus recruiting will largely be regional. Not to say you can’t get a job anywhere with a degree from one of these schools, but you may have to do some more legwork. Berkeley will be more strongly recruited by California/Western companies, Texas by Texas/Southwestern companies, and Michigan by Midwest/Eastern companies. Where you want to eventually settle might have some impact on what you choose.

All 3 school has similar academic and social atmosphere.

Given that you are from California, have you considered the horrible weather in Michigan. I lived in Ann Arbor, it’s literally FREEZING the majority of the academic year.

It sounds like you want a change of an environment, so UCB is out as well.

Recommendation: it sounds like UT - Austin would be the perfect for you.

I can only assume if the OP is smart enough to get into any of these three schools, he/she is quite aware of the climate differences. Many Californians have gone to Michigan over the decades, so there must be some type of draw. It’s not like the weather in Ann Arbor is that much worse than any other place in the northeast. Still, it is definitely colder than the bay area and the hill country of Texas.

yeah haha im perfectly aware of the weather. im going to michigan today so i’ll see how i like it. i’ve pretty much ruled texas out so its between cal and michigan now. ill see how i like it
thanks a lot everyone

^^^Let us know how your visit went. :-)
