Berkeley vs UCLA

Laguna,

I can dig up plenty of bad stuff at Berkeley. Or Columbia. Or Harvard. Or Princeton. Or any school. That has no bearing whatsoever on the quality of the academics per se.

Lol, I know, but if you could find some that would be fun to read for the time being

Yay someones awake

A group of about seven young men walked by Willis-Starbuck and her friends, said they were Cal students, and asked the women to party with them. When rebuffed, they called the women "*****es" and an argument between the men and women ensued, Youngblood said.

Talk about model citizens /sarcasm

Like the poster above me said, you can find something bad about any school.

I personally dont like the preachers lol

Edit: Also yours werent fun to read, they were sad and depressing. And the men apologized after the argument for your third article. Your second article has nothing to do with the school, only something that happened in the Berkeley city

Laguna,

Trust me when I say that almost all schools get their crazy preachers. Heck, one of them used to go on a countrywide tour!

lol that sounds awesome, i want to meet some preachers wherever i end up at

Anyway, back to discussing this issue...

I think that a lot of it should come down to personal taste. If you prefer LA, go to LA. If you prefer Cal, go to Cal. The truth is that neither one is going to significantly affect your ability to succeed in life more than the other. This isn't the difference between Cal State Podunk and Harvard, after all.

William Hung from Berkeley is already the biggest joke in the centery.

Is he as funny as watching you try to spell!? lol...

This is a little off-topic but I heard that both UCLA and Berkely now get around the outlawing of Affirmative Action by using bonus points. As an Asian-American (literally Asian, and American blood), would I have a better chance at admission to these universities by marking myself as 'caucasian' instead of 'asian?'

Have you ever been to UCB...they have no problem accepting Asians.

kevin, my bro!! u finally are posting some things. that's good. ta d

the man that murdered the woman in berkeley.. .his only description is that he was african american wearing jeans and a white T- shirt, and last seen in a car heading east on Dwight Way... how promising.

From other site:

In response to the question: How does Berkeley's Economics and Business Program compares to UCLA's Economics?

[quote]
Answer
I do not have direct experience with either of these two programs, but I have heard from lots of people that Economics and especially Business are supposed to be very hard to get into and also have very difficult classes. I do know that the competition between business majors is uncomparable to anything you will experience anywhere else. So don't go to Berkeley as a business major and expect to have study groups and get help from other classmates. There is a strict curve at the business school and people will go out of their way NOT to help you.

I dont know anything about UCLA's programs, but as far as between the two universities as wholes ** Berkeley is by far the most prestigious. If you want to increase your chances of getting a job as soon as you get out, then go to Berkeley. ** This is not saying you wont get a job if you go to UCLA, its just that other schools (if you want to apply to a graduate program) and employers know that Berkeley is the top rated public school in the country and if you are of the quality to get in and graduate from there they will be much more impressed.

UCLA has its good points as well. The cost of living off campus will be lower than in Berkeley, and the competition between students might not be that tough (but I can't guarantee that).

I can speak from personal experience. I only applied to two schools and I got into both (UC Davis and Berkeley). I only applied to two because I really wanted to go to Davis and had since I was little, and I knew I could get in. My mom made me apply to Berkeley because she really believed I could get in.

So I got into both. Then my mom sat me down and told me how much more prestigous Berkeley was than Davis, and she took me to Berkeley and had their counselors tell me that as well. I wanted to go to Davis because it was much more like the small hometown I was from and I wasn't prepared for the craziness of Berkeley.

I eventually listened to everyone telling me Berkeley was the best. I am so glad that I did it. It ended up being the best thing and I am glad that I made that decision. But this decision is yours to make. You need to weigh the pros and cons and decide from there. In case you can't tell I lean towards Berkeley, but you have to decide what will be the best fit for you. If you aren't happy at the school you won't do well and if you don't do well you wont get a job or into graduate school no matter which one you go to.

So my final advice, go with your heart!

Agree or disagree? Personally, I think the response is a load of BS and biased.

I think it's right to an extent, but it's shades of gray. It's not like going to Cal over UCLA is going to profoundly affect your life as much as the poster suggests, but I do think that it has benefits. Jobs? Not so much. Grad school? I think maybe a little, to be honest. Cal does send a slightly larger number of people to top schools every year based on some trends I've noticed. Is it enough to care? Nah.

UCLA has its good points as well. The cost of living off campus will be lower than in Berkeley, and the competition between students might not be that tough (but I can't guarantee that).

Boy, this guy obviously doesn't know a thing about LA.

"UCLA has its good points as well. The cost of living off campus will be lower than in Berkeley, and the competition between students might not be that tough (but I can't guarantee that)."

what's wrong with that statement?

I've looked at costs of housing in both Berkeley and Westwood. Bekeley is not more expensive. And competition is tough.

i think it depends which part of berkeley you live in... elmwood district may be more expensive than westwood.

In general, however, rent is not more in Berkeley. Nor is UCLA not competitive.

ucla is less competitive than cal--from what I experienced and from what other people said
