Berklee College of Music!!!

Wadup Forum

I got a SAT score of 2000
I'm planning to take SAT 2 MAth & History
I have a GPA of 4.02~ greater

The problem is. I never really "learned" music
I actually self taught music.... awww
I prepared 2 musical scores and 1 my favorite song.
I sang, composed, wrote two of them...
Scores are relatively ok...
but I can't really "read" music... :(
that means I'm gonna suck at the live auditon

does that mean I'm screwed?? like.. completely???

Unfortunately yes. I had a friend get into Berklee last year, the admissions process is almost entirely based off your musical background and audition instead of test scores. Not being able to sight-read will be a massive blow to your audition. Sorry

Although I have seen some odd admissions into Berklee and UNT, I have to say you are probably not going to go far into the admissions process if you can’t read music. (and that would apply to most larger state schools as well)

The other problem would be that even if you could get in, I’m afraid the first theory class would eat you alive. They are going to not only assume you know how to read music but that you have some fundamental understandings of chords, scales and keys. It would be almost impossible to get through.

Don’t lose heart yet, however. I have seen kids start in Community College and take some of their ‘foundations of music’ classes that teach some of this information at a pre-theory level. If you could fit something like that into your Senior year, you might have a better chance of getting into college, although at this late point, the chances of Berklee are pretty remote.

I know a drummer at Berklee who could not read music before going. It was not held against him at his audition (though it may be different for a drummer). And yes, the first theory class was tough - but he learned…
