D is feeling at sea in AP Art History-- reams of reading and a teacher who doesn't help much with the synthesis. Can anyone suggest a good AP study book to help her find some structure as she goes along?

Would it help her to have Gardner’s Art through the Ages? It was a widely used text for the survey class I took in college (which is what AP Art History is supposed to mimic). Very thorough with lots of images.

And if not Gardner - there’s Janson - though it may focus more on western art. Interesting little article about a recent revision: [Revising Art History’s Big Book: Who’s In and Who Comes Out? - New York Times](<a href=“Revising Art History's Big Book: Who's In and Who Comes Out? - The New York Times”>Revising Art History's Big Book: Who's In and Who Comes Out? - The New York Times)

My daughter swore by The Annotated Mona Lisa. It’s just a small book but it was a tremendous help. I don’t think she paid much attention to Gardners. She also used a Barrons AP prep book and freerice.com. She did not really take an art history course but self studied and scored a 5 while an exchange student in S. America. I hope these sources help your daughter.

Brilliant-- thank you Apollo…and others. She has Gardner’s and is looking for something more boiled down. I’d seen The Annotated Mona Lisa and thought it looked interesting. Will try Barrons too. Funny I think of freerice as a vocab site-- I’ll look at it again.

Freerice has included art images for quite a while. The newest thing is advanced French and Italian vocabulary. There is something for everyone on that site AND it helps others. I highly recommend it.

Barron’s gets the nod here. REA is mentioned for accurate test questions. This was one of S’s two sophomore APs, before he discovered study guides, so I can’t personally vouch for Barron’s, but the “Consolidated book suggestions for AP” thread has been good to him since.

Thank you, SteveC…I knew there must be a thread like this but couldn’t find it! (Then I realized that Amazon.com would have reviews that did more or less the same thing, and Barron’s it was!) Now back to freerice…oh, I mean work.

I would recommend REA-it is written by the teachers who developed the AP curriculum,is concise, and test-oriented. My son used that book and class outlines and scored a 5 last year without an inordinate amount of study time. Good luck and enjoy the rest of the course. Art History is one of the classes you take that is truly enriching beyond the grade achieved.
