So I've heard about some of the horror stories about housing at Depaul. That still doesn't deter me from wanting to go there. But I wanted to get some suggestions about some decent apartments in or around either the lincoln park or loop campus. I've read about the 1237 West place and the UCC, but if there are any other options out there, the suggestions would be appreciated.

bump. You all have got to live somewhere when you go to Chicago. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I will probably live in the Skokie area, near my family. I’m not too familiar with the apartments in Skokie, but the area itself is pretty nice.

If I understand correctly, thats a bit outside the main Chicago area, right?

It is closer to Northwestern more so than DePaul. You should look for apartments in the city; ideally you want to be as close to Kellstadt as possible. Living in the city rather than the suburbs would be much more enjoyable: it would be easier to commute to DePaul and it would also offer more entertainment, namely the Chicago nightlife.

Are you from the Chicago area JUB0B0? If so, any suggestions about clubs, nightlife, places to eat, etc? Trying to a get a feel for the city before I actually get to go. Also, any suggestions for learning the L?

I currently live in Arizona but Chicago is my hometown. I’m not too familiar with the nightlife in Chicago since I’m only 18; I do know that rush street offers different forms of entertainment for those of the ages 21 and older. Occasionally, attending a sporting event (ie Cubs, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, and even a DePaul basketball game) would be entertaining. That’s about as much as I know :(

I’d also like to add that navy pier is a nice attraction. The boat ride through the Chicago River is a memorable experience.

Chicago is a great city and your apartment options are endless. One thing I HIGHLY recommend doing is getting an apartment that is very close to a CTA “L” or Subway stop (preferably the Red Line). The Red Line takes you pretty much anywhere you might need to go in the city and both of DePaul’s campuses are right off the Red Line.

owais027, andy particular complexes that you would suggest? I just want to know exactly where I should look once im in Chicago. I have an idea of a few general neighborhoods like the loop and lincoln park, but is there any where within those neighborhoods that would offer good living at a reasonable price?

Apt hunting depends on how many roommates you will have, how much you can afford, how close you want to be to school/job/friends/L stop…etc…
If you live with others, how many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need?

Most likely, you’ll end up in some apt leasing office to sign papers. Talk to the leasing people about who will be responsible for problems (heat/leaks/gas smells…etc…) once the lease is signed. Some landlords good…some not so good.

Find an online map with Metro stops and familiarize yourself with streets near college. Start looking at Craigslist and see the amounts that apts in Linc Pk and Loop are renting for.

For Depaul in Lincoln Pk, I think W. Diversey is about as far north as I’d go. My D found it a tough walk on cold days from that location and she now lives on one of the side streets nearer campus and is much happier.

The UCC i’ve heard is pretty sketchy and most of the students that live there are Columbia students rather than DePaul.

As far as nightlife goes, there are a TON of bars right around the LP campus easy walking distance.

1237 is a good facility to live in if you’re not familiar with the area. I havent had any complaints with living there but some of my friends have.

skokie is a ridiculous place to live if you’re going to depaul. stay within the lincoln park area: lakeview, wrigelyville, basically any of the “near northside” neighborhoods.

The L is the easiest transit you will ever ride. the Library stop and Jackson are the stops that drop you off next to the loop campus. Chicago will get you to michigan ave. the loop campus is in a great area if you like shopping, haha, as just a walk down state street you run into akira, f21, and uo.

basically how i learned the L was using google directions.

fair enough, blackhawks. I’ve been looking at 1237, but I wasn’t sure if there were any other places that only current students or Chicago natives would know about. Thanks for the advice, and please share more if you have it.

There are way too many apartment buildings in Chicago for me to mention anything specific, but like it’s been mentioned above, it all depends on how many bedrooms you want, how many roommates, and how much you’re willing to pay. It also depends on what kind of area/environment you want to be in.

I personally prefer the loop or river north/magnificent mile/Michigan ave area; but a lot of my friends like Lincoln Park and areas up north, so its up to you. And the price of apartments varies greatly from area to area. So when you’re here in Chicago, look everywhere and look at many apartments and the surrounding area to make sure you like it.

But like I said before, no matter what be close to an L stop, preferably the Redline. As a first year student, if you’re going to live in an off campus apartment, I would recommend staying in LP…the zip code is 60614. Search with that and you’ll get tons of results.

my friend lives on w diversey and kenmore with 3 roommates and it’s a pretty nice place. i dont remember the price he’s paying, but i’ll get back to you on that. the only thing that sucks about where he lives is that the only L train that runs at the diversey stop is the brown and purple lines and those stop at midnight and dont resume until about 4 or 5am. then i always end up having to walk home.
