Best Boarding Schools

Did not, he did.

Lol......................................

icy, I have looked very closely at Groton and Middlesex matrics and I find little diff from top to bottom.

this is my view:

easd, c, h, and then in no order: groton, middlesex, st. mark's, milton, lville

thacher, cate, taft, sgs, peddie, mercers, blair, hill, nmh... a few others which i forget

then all of the top single-sex schools (ms, ew, avon, gtown prep, dana hall maybe), tabor.. kent...episcopal..maybe balor?.. and others...

and then schools which i know very little about...ones that give you way too many brochures ad are way too aggressive.

btw, i may be missing a few in each tier..

My opinion (subjective) - what I like more, not top academically

Choate

SPS

Hotchkiss

Andover

Groton

SGS

Exeter

etc. (not going to go on)

Blair, I'm pretty sure that Groton, Middlesex, and perhaps Lawrenceville have better matriculation than Choate. (No offense, Olivia. :D)

Yes, Groton, Middlesex and Lville do have better matrics than Choate. Does that make them better? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO The school does not make the person and it does not mean that some how you will be better in some way.

revised tier 1:

EA (top 2, absolute pinnacle :D), S... ("eas", like "ease"), then in NO ORDER, choate, deerfield, groton, middlesex, st. mark's, milton, lville, hotchkiss

What if you want to go to school with 300 to 400 hundred students? Would EA be the "absolute pinnacle"? What if 800 plus students is seen as a negative?

I think Groton, SPS, Middlesex, Hotchkiss, and maybe Deerfield have higher ivy matriculation than A/E, or maybe it's about equal.

this is how i would rank the other tier 1's after EAS...this is in terms of pure "prestige"

EAS,
choate/deerfield (can't decide who's first), groton (though I really don't like it, it's very elite and super traditional), Lville (this place needs more rep on this board), hotchkiss (though i personally find it boring), then milton (but i'm not sure), and then I'm not sure about St. Marks's and Middlesex, since I didn't seriously look into either, but I would have to go with Middlesex, and then St. Mark's... yep, I'm going with that.

so, here's my official, soon to be published rankings. they're totally unbiased, and based soley on the following factors:

How my facial muscles responded when someone mentioned the name of the school. Genius or what? I know, I know, it's called the Bunkel index. It's totally valid and you should take it for fact and nothing else, for its superior to all other lowly figures. I had I even had an EEG to accurately measure first impression. Each facial muscle twitch was recorded. I don't have any references. It's valid and I'm paid to do it.

Exeter :D:D:D:D:D:D ! wootwoot w0o0o IN DA HOUSE (Strips off business clothes to reveal permanently attached red jumpsuit, red suspenders and red chaps, red striped knee socks, and tattoo of the academy seal. Awkward victory dance.)
Andover :):):D:)..(scrunches nose). The art gallery and is nice. George Bush and Libby are not.
Sps :) :).. :(.. :/ .. :? (You're a tad too into yourself. Quit it with the Anglophilia, already.)
Choate :) + thumbs up for NYC /ORRRRR/ Deerfield :) / :? (it's pretty sweet that a royal attended.. but it's a bit TOO traditional.. a bit TOO "old boy", almost.. too deserted, also)
Groton :| (Just the name alone depresses me. Too much like super strict old English boarding schools. I feel dark.)
LVille :) + thumbs up for being the least self-congratulatory of the top preps, and for interesting early history with AE .. + extra thumbs up for harkness and princeton proximity, and extra thumbs for being suburban yet near NYC.. this is a great prep.
Hotchkiss (Blank stare. Scrunches nose. Changes subject.) Thumbs up for the funny kids who made the famous youtube videos at the school. Super thumbs down for the grads who published a chick lit on prep school based on their experience there. Extra thumbs downs for all the other tacky alums like that.
Milton :) :/ + thumbs up for proximity to boston and educating some Kennedys! And unique day/board population, thumbs down for a crappy admissions secretary who forgot to send me a brochure 6 times (yes, 6)..organizational issues or something.
Middlesex + thumbs up for BILL RICHARDSON 2008! WOOOOT! ROCK THE VOTE GO BILL! MY HERO! + Clays
St. Marks.. I like the scribble part on the application (Half smile). Don't know you too well. You're a tad boring, though. Work on that.

So there you have it. I can't discuss this any further because I will publish it whoknowswhen, and you can't get any get anymore, cuz I'm gettin' paid for this, kiddies.

in the list above, if i were looking for schools whose names contained the letter "L", i would get:

St. Paul's
Deerfield
LVille
Milton
Middlesex

So, if I had specifics, and not just general rankings, then if I trusted a given rank, I would chip away at it based on what you do not want. as a rule, of course.

Hail Old Mercersburg! W00t! Go MAPL League! Kick Those New England Pansies Back To Cape Cod!

ahhahahaha

blair,

Take a deep breath, put down the crack pipe, and slowly step away from the computer. Now, isn't that better?

Did someone mention MIDDLESEX?

Let's be nice.

I don't think many on this board give enough credit to schools like Deerfield, Choate and others. There are just so many great schools and rankings certainly don't determine the kinds of experiences kids have at any one of them. There are also too many factors that go into matriculation data. We all know this. Kids who are lucky enough to go to any of the schools mentioned on this board are just that -- lucky enough. Enjoy!

CHOATE and DEERFIELD? Are you kidding? What about the rest of America you pansy New Englanders? What about Cate and Ojai in grand California, and Lawrenceville and Peddie in good ol' New Jersee! What about our dear old friend MERCERSBURG, home of Jimmy Stewart and Benicio del Toro, and the Hill School in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. Then there is tradition-rich Western Reserve Academy in Ohio and the Cranbrook Schools in stately Michigan. What have you to say for the proud colours of the Culver Academies, yea, there are so many more!

You shame us New Englanders! You shame us.

I certainly don't mean to offend you. If you look at several of my old posts, you will see that I have written quite extensively about the merits of exactly the schools you mention -- Mercersburg being one of my absolute favorite schools and Peddie and Blair also.

I have not read many good things at all about Deerfield, just good things about their matriculation data, and it appears to me to not be a well liked school by some on this board. Choate gets positive comments but also gets put down along with Deerfield and Groton out of the New England schools mentioned. As for the "second tier", and "third tier schools", what is often shared here is very critical and other than matriculation, I'm not sure what it's based on. Of course much of this is just the opinions of those participating and hopefully new kids who come to this board will realize that. Opinions strongly stated do leave an impression on the reader.

Matriculation data should, in my view, not be the best way to define the quality of any school. There is so much more to a school than that. Kids reading these posts can probably come away thinking, these are the great schools and the rest are not. School size and MANY other factors obviously determine that data. I worry about kids coming on here reading about these schools and coming away believing that only a few are the very best. What's very best for each individual is very personal and we shouldn't get so hung up on ratings. It's nice to know who is first etc., but just because a school is 3rd, 4th, 24th or whatever, does not mean it's not an absolutely great school for someone. I don't think that message should be lost.

It think tokyorevelations was just teasing you, liv&learn.
