Andover

SPS
(in no specific order)

i however like blair and suffield but they arnt the tops.

(in no particular order)

Tier 1:

Andover
Exeter
SPS
Hotchkiss
Deerfield
Groton

Tier 2:

Middlesex
Milton
L'ville
Choate

benevolent4them, I honestly think your definition of "Tier 1" is quite wrong.

***PrepReview... One of the ranking services. You can't really rank though... all of these 30 schools can be considered tier 1 because there are close to 400 BS in america, they are all in the top 10% of boarding schools...

If you define the top tier as the top percent you would get (and in this order) SPS, DF, Milton (top percent as defined by these statistics)

If you want to add more (because they are JUST as good) you would add Groton through Hotchkiss. PrepReview is considered the USNWR (cost $$ though!, luckily I got it free) of boarding schools. It looks at SAT score, College matriculation, and a various amount of other things.

Of course if you add pedigree to this list it would be something like (and in this order) A/E, DES, Groton, Milton... Something like that... Remember all of these schools are top notch, and even #30 is 92.5% among all boarding schools which are, automatically, some of the best educational institutions in the country.

College matriculation percents are based off of matriculation into Ivy, MIT, and Stanford. The many other "Ranks" are HYPSM placement rank, endowment, and teacher student ratios.

Because this is somewhat difficult to read I will put the link for this. It will not show the school name, but with the rank given from here you can match it up from this website...
Can you provide a link to this website? I am surprised because PrepReview does this as their main focus... They have been fairly accurate (even with the fluctuation in matriculation).

And in terms of matriculation, there is no way that anything is ahead of SPS, DF/Milton... Look at the data, it should be on their websites.

I'm sure it just depends on how the weighting / combination of the various statistics is made. SPS seems to do very well on matriculation (I assume that is the 34% statistic above). However, what is more important? -- difference between 34% and 29% matriculation between SPS and Exeter, or higher average endowment per student at Exeter or 24 point higher SAT score. I'm sure the mix of students in the schools is much different. For example, Exeter/Andover probably focus more than SPS on attracting top level athletes / PG students as part of their admissions diversity goals. However, it is much more likely that these athletes will attend non-Ivy schools for financial reasons since Ivy's don't give D1 athletic scholarships. Could easily move matriculation average from 29% to 34% if this difference in student body mix is reflected. For SPS entering class of about 150 students(?), 5% Ivy matriculation difference works out to 8 student atheletes. Then again, I can easily see why highest matriculation % would be a very important selling point from a parent's perspective, so choosing the list with the appropriate drivers of rankings is very important. I think there is a saying somewhere about "Lies and Statistics".

"There are lies, there are liars, then there are statistics"

Assuming the matriculation info at prepreview is accurate (which I highly doubt), then if it can flutuate from 32% (prepreview) to 24 (2008 data on deefield website) for Deerfield, or from 32% (prep review) to 22 (2008 data on milton website) for Milton, what conclusion can you draw from looking at one year's ranking, in terms of college matriculation? principalviola, when you say "They have been fairly accurate (even with the fluctuation in matriculation). ", how do you support your statement?

The ranking depends on how they weigh each factor!. That means the ranking is different depending on who publishes! The top five is SPS, Adndover, Exeter, Deerfirled, Groton(not in order), and the rest of them are hard to decide ranking. I'd accept the fslzcl's ranking as the top 30-35 without order, and they belong to tier 1 since there are more than 400 BS in the nation. Of course there will be still some arguement about the schools around 35th. But it always happens arind the cutoff line even for the college. For collge, they publish top 50 or top 100. Many colleges complain about the ranking(even top colleges).

I called a few schools (I think I put this in another post) and they said students are looking at other, just as good, schools. Milton/DF/SPS/Andover are ahead of the other schools, in every year, and it doesn't change so quickly.

Remember to take the crisis into consideration, less people will be able to afford ivies.

GTM I agree with that, the blue print in my post basically says that. All of these schools are top in their field. If you want the top % you would get: HADES+Milton+Choate+Groton, and so on. Other than the combined top ten (from both lists, which have a big overlap) I doubt you can make tiers.

Why do I say the combined top ten? Even though the other schools provide just as good of an education, with the public these schools have a pedigree. Exeter was known for their Yale matriculation, until the 70s the headmaster could just call and say "hey I'm sending XXX over"... Milton and Andover were known for their Harvard admission. Lawrenceville with their princeton matriculation.

The following is a ranking published by a Korean private BS prep institute. They regard the follwoing school as first rate borading school. That is an objective evaluation. So we can say the follwoing 35 schools are Tier1. If you want to pick top 5 out of the follwoing, it is up to you. However, it will be a good idea to pick in your own without posting not to offend others. I think this list is just for your information only since there is no absolute ranking.

The ranking was determined based on SAT score, endowment/student, number of AP classes, number of Sports club, number of Extracurricular activities, boarding students ratio, students to teachers ratio, percentage of the advanced degree holding faculties, students per class, and its history(foundation year)
