My S has just been accepted into graduate schools in Electrical Engineering specializing in Communications and Network. We're having trouble deciding between these four universities:

Rice
ASU
UCSD
Texas A&M

Can anyone give me some stats, or insights/opinions, regarding this department in the four schools? And job-wise, which school has the best option?

Welome to College Confidential! Here are my opinions on each school.

Rice
-Most Prestige
-Better Alumni Network
-Close to many major corporations/job opportunites

ASU
-Cheapest (Unless you are out of state or in state at UCSD)
-A bit of a party school
-Division 1 athletics

UCSD
-Good EE Department
-California weather
-Silicon Valey job oppotunities

Texas A&M
-Division 1 sports
-Good college town

Overall, I’d say go to Rice. The school is extremly prestigous and really does help you out on a resume. However, look into UCSD if money is a concern or you want to get a job immediatly in Silicon Valey.

Thank you! I think we might narrow it down to Rice and UCSD.

Does anyone else here have other opinion or things to add about these schools?

Maybe you can ask your Professors which university has the best opportunities for your sub-specialty?

I would personally go to UCSD hands down, its an excellent department at a great school.

UCSD is about 20 grand cheaper than Rice…

Good job on getting in to both!

If it’s a PhD program it’s going to come down to the specific professor and research group, and that really should be the focus and not the “school name”.
