Best Classes/Professors

Technically, the writing requirement is more than just not being flagged. Students are (eventually?) going to be required to keep a portfolio of their writing online. Additionally, they have to convince their advisor that they’re working on writing in their concentration essays. It’s not the strictest requirement, by any means…the Computer Science department has a stronger one.

I went to the website(mochacourses) and wow… you’re extremely right, it is HARD to pick out classes… Do Brown students just scan that website and pick out classes every year? What about some fabulous professors in international relations, biomed, history, applied math and chemistry courses??

Egyptology is supposed to have a fantastic professor. I don’t know her name, though.

In history, I’ve loved classes with Amy Remensnyder (medieval Europe) and Karl Jacoby (N. American environmental history); I’ve also heard good things about Ken Sacks (classical history), Robert Self (American hist.), Gluck (intellectual history), to name a few more.

This thread is so helpful- could anyone else share their favorite classes/professors? Or maybe any classes that ended up being disappointing?

It’s good to think about classes right now, but realize you’ll also have a chance to sit in on many classes during the “shopping period” each semester, before you have to commit.

Surprised no one has mentioned Hazeltine. [YouTube - Professor Barrett Hazeltine](<a href=“Professor Barrett Hazeltine - YouTube”>Professor Barrett Hazeltine - YouTube)

Susan Alcock in archaeology is good as well.

I think much of what people enjoy is in their own interest and their subjective, but some professors are so passionate and fun they make anything enjoyable.

Jackson FTW.
