Hey everyone, I’m not sure what the workload at Brown is but does anyone recommend any fun classes that they’re glad they’ve taken but has n’t burdened them with stress.

Hey Donald,

You’ll get lots of this kind of advising once you’re at Brown for orientation - your Meiklejohn advisor will be the best resource for this kind of thing.

I think it is a good idea to take a balanced load and stick to 4 classes until you can assess how you do with the work load.

My daughter didn’t connect with her Meiklejohn at all, so I doubt that was a good source for her. There is a class review site open to Brown students. Quora has some Q&A on Brown classes. F***yeahbrown tumblr discusses some classes.

My daughter took Russian Lit for this reason, though you wouldn’t think it. I’ve heard there is a great popular geology class.

you’re at the wrong school, kiddo

I agree with Napoleon. Opting for easy classes is a waste of an incredible educational opportunity. Take it from someone who’s been there.

Oh, come one. Just because a class is an easy A doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable or you won’t learn a lot. Hazeltine is a favorite prof for a reason. Donald, I know this question has come up here before so if you do a search you might find some suggestions. I’m sure most of the guts offered when I was at Brown have been replaced by new ones. I know Clapping for Credit is long gone (a shame, if you ask me, and I didn’t even take it).

Time out. To say or suggest that Dean Hazeltine is a favorite prof because his class might be an easy A…if it is…does an injustice to the value of his teaching and a disservice to people trying to read these threads for substance. It is also a personal insult.

No class is an easy A
I learned this

fenway,

I’m pretty sure that fireandrain was making the exact point you’re making. I didn’t take any of engin9, rocks for jocks, or russian lit, and yet Hazeltine is the only professor of those 3 I’ve heard of.

OK. Maybe I misread the post, and sorry if I did. The good Dean Hazeltine is probably the most revered person in the Brown community and he is a prime example of why Brown is unique. This gives an idea:

Give me a break. OP asked " fun classes that they’re glad they’ve taken but hasn’t burdened them with stress." I think that is a valid approach to take in a mix of classes when you are starting out and want to test to waters or as a something to balance heavy load of classes, or even a way to check out a new field or something interesting.

OP - try to get into a first year seminar, any one that sounds interesting

Thanks, I_wanna. Yes, Fenway, you totally misread my comment. I said Hazeltine’s class is valuable and one where you learn a lot. I never took it – he was an institution when I was at Brown, and that was a long time ago. I agree with Threedogs.

Is Rocks for Jocks still around? I’m blanking on the names for all the others we had.

I agree with the FYS suggestion (if one tickles your fancy) simply because if you don’t take it now you won’t get to.

I’m celebrating my 5 year this may so Rocks for Jocks (geo 5 - screw the banner numbering system) may be gone by now, but it was definitely still there when I was.

I don’t know if people would consider TA22 (now called TAPS 0220)to be stressful or not, but it’s definitely a class I wish I had taken.

I don’t see a GEOL500, but there is a 50, called “Mars, Moon, and the Earth.”

Persuasive Communication (TAPS0220) is definitely known to be a well-taught and good course, though I haven’t see it particularly described as easy. I would consider TAPS0330 (Mande Dance and Culture) to be an easy class, though very fun. Many second-semester seniors in that one.

In terms of my second semester of senior year, I’m enjoying Bruce Becker’s EMS course (PHP1520) - one that’s been around for a while, and is still taught by Becker despite his run-in with the police last summer (http://www.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/content/20130808-providence-doctor-pleads-not-guilty-to-procuring-alcohol-for-minor-during-party-at-barrington-home.ece).

The conversion from pre-banner to banner is to add a 0 at the end so Rocks for Jocks would be GEOL0050. I have no idea what the course is/was actually called. I only ever heard it referred to as “Geo 5” or “Rocks for Jocks”
