Best college class ever--BBQ Tour

Some students at a southern school did a BBQ tour for class credit.

'Southern BBQ Boys!

Where do I sign up? We live in NC where BBQ is art. We had Eastern NC style BBQ for Christmas dinner. That’s how much we love our 'que, lol.
S2 would love this class.
I may order him the t-shirt,lol.

I’ll be. Turns out my husband has been home schooling himself all this time!

Packmom, We’re in Texas but I sure do miss eastern NC bbq. Of course, if I want to start a fight at a BBQ here all I have to do is mention my preference for it!

That’s fabulous. Oh how I do miss Carolina style BBQ.

I’ll have to tell my dh about this. We love BBQ, there’s some okay BBQ here in NY, but nothing like other parts of the country!

mathmom, I was at a diner in NJ once and ordered a BBQ sandwich…it was a couple of leathery slices of roast beef, drenched in a ketchup-colored sauce, served on a stale hoagie roll. I nearly wept in despair.

hoedown, LOL! I agree with you and mathmom that NY or NJ are not that great overall for BBQ, but you can find some that is pretty good if you look hard enough. You can look to NY or NJ for very good pizza, deli foods, and bagels. IMO, those things are harder to find in the south! Must say that I do remember having some very good BBQ food years ago in the Rochester area, so it does exist (nah, I don’t remember the name of the place because I was on vacation).

Actually, it’s usually a case of smelling hard enough. I’ve found that just following your nose tends to yield the best results, particularly if there be a tinge of hickory in the air. :D

The #1 thing I miss about living in NC is the BBQ. I have found a pretty close facsimile here in MI (Zingerman’s), but for some reason they just can’t get the slaw quite right…

Yep, we had a huge tub of slaw (if it’s eastern, it’s yellow) plopped down right beside the tub of BBQ at Christmas. My bro. gave my sis.(who lives in Atl.) two pounds of BBQ as part of her Christmas gift!!!

It’s not that dire - Dinosaur which is practically under the Riverside Bridge on 131st and Q’s in Port Chester make quite decent BBQ. Q’s has great sides - excellent potato salad, yummy sweet and tangy greens, and lots of interesting beers on tap.Actually Dinosaur also has a great beer seleciton, but I don’t like their sides as much. And last time we went to a concert at the Nokia Theater in Times Square we ate at Virgil’s and it was much better than we expected.

Dinosaur is most likely where you had bbq in Rochester as well! It’s based in Syracuse I believe, migrated to Rochester first and then opened up here in NYC a few years ago. Really good stuff!

runnersmom, yes that is the place! Do they always have lots of motorcycles parked there? When we were there we had very good BBQ, but we also got to see some really cool motorcycles. Apparently while we there lots of motorcyclists ate BBQ.

Well, I’ve never been to the Rochester outpost, but in Syracuse 1/2 the fun is checking out the rows of motorcycles! It’s a down and dirty location that draws crowds rain or shine. Two years ago during the Central New York Jazz Festival we waited in line for at least 2 hours…in the rain! What people won’t do for bbq in Central New York. For those who’ve been, and like the bbq sauce, they’ve bottled it for retail sale and I’ve found it in many regular grocery stores.

What a fun site! Scroll down this “Thank you” page to read their “sponsors”

[Thank You](http://www.southernbbqboys.com/Thank_You.html)

My D and I will kick off our college tour in April in Charlotte (Davidson) and then the Raleigh Durham area. Not sure we’ll have a car the whole time, as we might try train travel. Any suggestions on where to find the best NC barbeque in those areas? I anticipate this could be a high point of the trip - have longed to go to on a barbeque tour ever since reading Calvin Trillan’s book (can’t recall name - was it American Fried??) Yum!

I don’t know which Trillin book you read, but back in 1979 I drove around the country with a battered copy of Alice Let’s Eat. I don’t think we missed any of his favorite places. He was more of a Kansas City Arthur Bryant’s BBQ style however.
