Best college towns...

I know we all talk about which college is better in terms of academics and intramurals, but let's talk about the surroundings. What are some of the best college cities and towns you've been in? What's so great about your college town?

Best College Towns:
not Williamsburg

That depends on your own personal taste. Some find University of the South (Sewanee) an amazing college town because of it's acres upon acres of green grass and it's amazing landscape looking outward. Some would (have on this site before) said NYU in NYC has the best college town because there's always something to do around town. Others like towns such as Austin (TX) because the town is focused around the university and it's athlethics program. For I feel NYU has an awful surrounding area if considered a college town, and many would argue that. Which is the best is clearly based upon what you like.

Wow, this question is really subjective.

Hmm, when I was visiting schools what I hated most was schools in rural areas/little stifling towns (like Williamsburg! Ugh! I think that totally ruined my opinion of W&M; I just couldn't get over where it was and how claustrophobic I felt there!).

NYU-type schools are exciting to me, but I think a little scary.

I think the best college towns are those schools that are near cities/in cities but have their own campus. I think places like UCLA, Northwestern have great college towns - an ok, non-overwhelming surrounding area, but just steps away from huge city life. I also found big schools in relatively rural areas were ok, too, because the school itself was like it's own little city.

Boston? :D

Austin (UT)

Ann Arbor?

Chico, CA :D

"Chico, CA"
Agree

People should only post about towns they've been to.

Some of the best I've been to
Seattle (U of Washington), Tempe (Arizona State), Santa Barbara (UCSB), Westwood (UCLA), Cambridge (Harvard), Davis (UCD)

Some of the worst
New Haven (Yale), Los Angeles- the bad part (USC)

"NYU type schools = scary?"
