I want to be in Silliman because it's so pretty. :) My tour guide was in that one, so we got to go inside and marvel. However, I'll probably end up elsewhere since a Yalie who graduated from my HS last year was "sorted" into Silliman. I just hope I don't end up in Morse or Stiles.

Somebody from my school went to Stiles last year, so I'm not going there, most likely. Any of the others are fair game. I'm fond of Silliman because it has a movie theatre. And it's pretty and close to the science buildings. I'm a science/film person, so maybe they'll put me in. :) But really, anywhere's fine.

1000th post! Tadaaa!

Aww that's so nice of you to give your 1000th to Yale :)
I wonder where my 2000th went, I don't remember, but 5,000 will be for Yale for sure.

Anybody heard anything about Trumbull? It looks really nice.

I hate Trumbull, although it might be better once it gets renovated next year. To all of you that think you won't get put in the residential college other people from your high school were put in I think the system is more random than that because I was put in an entryway with someone who lives 10 minutes from me (who granted went to boarding school) and the current Yale sophomore that also graduated from my high school was also put in Silliman.

More on the dining halls, some of the restrictions are so stringent (Pierson and Saybrook) that for dinner you can only get in if you are in that college or Davenport (Dporters are granted access to any dining hall because they have no dining hall of their own). Berkeley's system involves an extremely limited amount of transfers that can only be used if you go right when the dining halls open.

The Bushes (family) were Davenporters, but don't hold that against it!
Dport's a great college- they go on a lot of trips -skiing, NYC (opera, museums, Lincoln Center) as a group for cheap.. $20 each or so. And next year Dport will be newly renovated, so you won't have to worry about getting kicked out for renovation in the future.

My general conception of colleges:

The "best" ones are Branford, Berkeley, Davenport and Pierson (those are the ones that most people want to transfer into). Sillimanders and TD people have mixed reviews about not living on Old Campus... I know one of my friends in TD is really ****ed about that because he doesn't meet many freshmen. However, that being said, both colleges do have a lot of college spirit. Morse and Stiles are ugly, but that's only in comparison with the Gothic colleges, and most non-freshmen in those colleges get their own singles. Davenport's known as the "legacy college" -- see Bush for further details. Calhoun's the "forgotten college," because there's not much remarkable about it except for its absence of good food. Because I'm a Branfordian, Saybrook is "the cancerous growth off of Branford," but they do have a nice courtyard. And also because I'm a Branfordian, JE sucks, but they are the wealthiest college. Trumbull is the poorest, because it started out as the college that women and minorities are assigned to, so it didn't have all the legacy that Davenport and JE did, but Trumbullians have blenders in their dining halls, which make for awesome milkshakes.

Hope that helps.

Which is the college with "Princess Suites"?

"Trumbull is the poorest, because it started out as the college that women and minorities are assigned to..."

This is utter nonsense, (and arguably sexist and racist...)
Where did you get this rumor from?

Well, it's probably more than a rumor considering nervous goes to Yale.

It might be a rumor, it might not be a rumor, but it's probably the general conception about Trumbull at Yale. That doesn't mean it's true, and it certainly doesn't mean nervous is sexist or racist.

Are you sexist or racist, nervous? Do we need to have a little heart-to-heart? Yeah, I didn't think so.

I think the princess suite is in one of the places where the freshmen live, if you're talking about the suites once set aside for the Vanderbilts. People are assigned to it by random draw.

The princess suites are on the top floor of Welch, the freshman dorm for Davenport. They are only given to girls.

How are the rooming assignments made, by the way? Same sex by floor or suite or co-ed?

For freshmen, same sex by floor and suite.

Yale definitely encourages each and every residential college to think of themselves as the best....legacies can request their parent's college, OR request to NOT be in their parents and they do their best to honor the request.....I have heard that there are more singles in Morse and Stiles...so there is a silver lining in each and every college assignment...when it comes to food, some of the dining halls have restrictions due to their food being soo popular (Berkeley I think) and also the location, lots of folks try to go to a site that is convenient to make it back to a class or activity etc.....I have heard that the Law School dining hall is excellent....so that is an option for underclassmen also....and supposedly the pizza has recently improved dramatically at Commons.....part of the fun is roaming.....

What department determines what residential college a freshman is assigned to? Is it the Admissions office?

Do Silliman kids miss not having been on the Commons frosh year?

Yes, admissions officers told us that they place the students in the various colleges as "their last official act" after the accepted students have committed to the college.
