Best Colleges for Zoology major or Pre-vet for undergrad?

This may sound weird but I don’t want to attend an ivy league school such as Cornell or Harvard for my undergrad, I want to be able to enjoy my youth.

Based on the research that I have done so far, the only university in the Times Higher Education top 50 universities for life sciences that offer zoology as an undergraduate major is the University of Wisconsin Madison.

I have a gpa of 3.8 and have never had anything below a B- except for 1 semester of AP Biology.

I’m rank 29 of my class of 300 and I am in the top 10%.

I run track, have done volleyball my sophomore year, on student council, and am doing a debate on cultures/genders, ethncity, and race thing in my advisory.

I got a 21 on my ACT but do not plan on turning that in and instead showing my SAT score which I take in October.

What is your home state?

In other threads, you’ve listed some hard to get into publics like Berkeley and UFlorida.

How much will your parents pay for college? Those OOS publics will cost a LOT.

I live in Michigan.

I took Berkeley off my list and might take UF off my list because of the registration deadline. I started looking into University of Washington and the University of Hawaii-Manoa but I don’t know if they would be good for either things I want to study.

I want to go to a university that has a good pre-vet program or zoology but academics won’t be the center of my life. I want to go to college for the experience along with the academics and somewhere where I can be safe, and enjoy life at the same time.

My parents will pay for college as long as I get good grades and attend my classes.

What’s the issue with UF’s deadline? It’s November 1’st. You have until the end of December to get UF your SAT scores. You should plan on taking the SAT twice, since UF (and other colleges) will super score your SAT.

Admissions is competitive and you may not get offered a merit scholarship (and have to pay full OOS tuition, around $28K a year). However, it has a great College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and life sciences program. We also know how to do the “Fun” thing (maybe a little too well…).

Good Luck!!

UC Davis is one of the top schools for Animal Science (a Pre-Vet major) and it has one of the top vet schools. Good Luck!

My daughter is a sophomore zoology major out here in the Pacific Northwest. Her grades were a little lower and her ACT was significantly higher. Since she was wildlife focused as opposed to pre-vet, she was more interested in non-urban locations. Also, prestige within animal sciences is very different from a list of general college prestige.

Her list:
Washington State University (in-state safety)
Colorado State Ft. Collins
U Montana
U Wyoming
Willamette
Humboldt State (CA)

Considered but did not apply:
U Idaho (only 8 miles from WSU, didn’t like campus as much)
Oregon State

Let me know if you would like more info on any of these.

Note that Michigan State has a very well respected zoology program. No real need to come out west.
