Finance and Economics, finance and IT or the class finance and accounting?
Want to own my own business one day. Definitely want an online component. Economics is interesting and very applicable, and accounting and finance go together really well, but I’m not sure if I’ll really stand out that much if I pursue this.
Looking at UIUC which is #2 in the country for accounting if that changes anything.
Mathematics and Computer Science. Actually, I agree with ScaredNJDad1. As an undergrad, I would major in a traditional discipline such as Mathematics and Economics (double major).
@db1128 Each of the double major possibilities is applicable to different career paths. If you are looking into banking, asset management, etc, then Finance/Accounting or Finance Econ can be attractive. If you are looking into business positions at a tech company whether it be Business Development, Growth Strategy, or depending on what data languages you learn, you can also look into Product Analyst roles. If you are interested in being an economist, mgmt consultant, or a client-side business team member then finance & economics will likely be the most applicable.
Since you said that you want to own your own business some day, a strong understanding of accounting is important, whether you want to couple that with an econ, finance, or IT degree kind of depends on a number of variables.
The below will help identify what skills will be the most relevant, what skills you can learn along the way versus in school, who you might be able to partner with for your business venture:
Hypothetically, when would you want to start your own business?
How do you envision your professional career up to the point that you start your own business?
Now that I look at this post again, it sounds like you are not in college (if you are “looking at UIUC”) and so you probably have not taken one finance class yet. I’d caution against plotting out your college career including choosing a major and a second major/minor until you actually start taking some busienss classes. At any b-school you will take a core curriculum to include introductory classes in a variety of business disciplines. I’d star off by taking these introductory classes – this will give you time to see what you enjoy and where your aptitudes lie before deciding on your major/minor.
