Best Departments

I know Pitt has one of the best Philosophy departments in the *world/i. Since I plan on majoring in philosophy, Pitt is at the top of my list. What are Pitt's other departments that are noteworthy?

Also, does the university adequately focus on its undergrads, or is all attention given to research and grad work?

In many rankings, Pitt's philosophy program is second, only behind Yale.

Other top programs:

Business, Chemistry, Economics, Engineeing, English, History, History and Philosophy of Science, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, and Physiology

Pitt gives much attention to undergrad students. Most classes in Arts & Sciences are capped at a maximum of 50 students, many classes are capped at around 25-30. And large classes have recitations of small groups. Professors are known to be very accesible.

Don't forget the nursing program which is 6th in the country and keeps moving up every year.

Sorry, stowmom. I can't believe I forgot nusing. I should also add biology and neuroscience.

does pharmacy have its own department, or is it considered as chemistry??

Pharmacy's its own school!

How is the math department there viewed?

I don't know about the math department, it might be great. But I must say that there seems to be a dearth of good professors at the lower levels (calc, linear algebra, diff eq). Also, the TA's I am familiar with have often had very heavy accents and might be difficult to understand until you get acclimated to the sound.

Thanks. Well, hopefully I'll be out of the lower levels soon.

chris, you know I have only a small sample size that might not be representative of the department overall.

The nursing program is excellent and highly regarded. It is one of Pitt's most selective schools.

Business (UG and G), German (small, but very good), Engineering (very dedicated to helping the students succeed) and Pharmacy (ditto Engr).
